My Sierra 1.6 is blowing some blue smoke on start up so I'm assuming the seals have had it, i have a new set to fit but what options are there apart from having the head off. Ive read up and some have done it with the tdc and rope way and others with compressed air thru an adapter, is there any other ways and what do people find best? Any pitfalls i should be aware of? Ive been quoted £80 for the job so should i just let a pro do it? Also is there more than 1 type of seal? Sorry for all the Q's, thanks in advance  |

If its a CVH engine, then putting it to TDC for the cylinder you are working on is enough to stop the valve dropping into the cylinder. Sealey, SykesPickavant and the usual suspects sell a tool to compress the spring and let you release the collets....  then prise up the old seal, pop new ones in, refit the collets and you are done, move on to the next cylinder, making sure it is at TDC. Its not complicated - I did it on both my old Orions and it made a huge difference to smoking in the morning and on the over-run. |

You can also make up adaptors to pressurise the cylinder with an airline down the plug hole (with the valves closed) or feed string down the plug hole and turn engine over to jam valve in place

i wonder if cvh lifters areas cheap as they used to be ? if it is cvh probably worth pricing a new set as from memory they used to be ridiculously cheap
