Hi, just trying to dig out some info, google just sends me down an illegal path and doesn't really bring up what I want! So, I'm wanting to buy a Private Plate from a dealer to put onto my car which currently doesn't have any MOT, (expired Sept '12) or a floor so I can't really send it for one either! I know a car has to have MOT to sell its plate, but does it have to have one to receive one?! Thanks

Just put it on retention. The guy who owns the plate can nominate someone else - you - to be the holder of the retention certificate. It costs you £105 just now, but no transfer fee if you put it on the car within 12 months. You can renew the retention certificate too. No issue that I can see provided the vehicle that currently has the plate is currently MoTd and taxed or was taxed in the past year and went straight on to SORN when the tax expired. No gaps.

One thing to remember you will never own the plate, No matter how much you pay for it, it is still owned by the DVLA and they can call it back any time they want, with no refund either, especially if you make the plate illegal by altering the spacing etc
