Have to replace the front bumper upon fathers 65,0000 km '82 Subaru Leone
with rather soft rubbery bumper corners upon a steel center:

(image link address too long for proboards)
Unfortunately the only bumpers I have been able to find aren't all that straight and have been drowned in a thick textured paint (underbody?).
Removing this from the once chromed steel is easy with paint scraper, and I may have to fill dents & paint it properly, forgoing the chrome.
But I'm open to suggestions regarding it's one good corner piece.
Can't scrape or sand it for fear of damaging its soft surface & gently stippled surface.
Worried paint stripper may damage the plastic/rubber. (should get some to try on incospicuous area shouldn't I)
Any ideas?
