has anyone doen this i have read the haynes and it seems pretty longwinded in removing the crank pulley? and i have a plastic cambelt cover so i have read its a bit of a PITA to do. can anyone run a stp by guide on how they done it ?it is a 1991 1.3 8v and my first cambelt change so i have to ask hope as usual you guys will help me out

How do they suggest you remove the pulley?

It's pretty damn easy, did one in a Tesco car park once. (well, it was a mk2 golf 1.3, but it's basically the same engine.) Did it on my mk2 Polo too. It was a while ago, but from memory:
Remove alternator belt. Unbolt alternator belt pully from the crank. Remove belt covers, there's a few little bolts hidden, but they're all easy enough to get to. Align engine to TDC and mark everything clearly with tipex (not essential, just makes it easier.) Rotate water-pump to slacken off the cambelt. Remove cambelt. Preferably replace water-pump. Throw it back together the same way it came apart.

the pulley can be tight against the chassis leg though, so some people remove the engine mount by the alternator and drop the engine on that side to get clearance. the other way is to loosen the engine mounts and use a peice of wood between the water pump pulley and chassis leg to lever the engine to get the clearance to remove the pulley
