Hi guys,
I have a 2003 1.6 litre, petrol mk 4 astra estate at the moment but a 1998 1.9tdi mk 3 Golf estate has come up.
What do you guys think would be the best car, both have a similar mileage. Hypothetically if you were to choose one and they were both the same price which would it be.
What sort of mpg does the golf get and what are they like in terms of reliability?
Thanks for any advice guys.
Regards
Tom

Golf - easily the better car. No idea with the MPG but the diesels are pretty good if you get a non-turbo one. Slow as but great on fuel. Wouldn't even consider an Astra as not a GM fan.

They're even better on fuel if they are a turbo one Should see ~50mpg average if driven sensibly, more on motorway runs at a legal speed.

Another vote for the Glof. Nothing against tha Astra, I'm sure it's good at doing car stuff but you're in the wrong place if you want someone to recommend a new-ish GM product over an older VW.

Golf is a great car with a great engine. Only problem with any mk3 Golf is that alot are starting get crusty rust rise, rust protection was never good on these.

Golf golf golf golf. Easier to fix, more reliable and will do mega MPGs, and best of all they aren't a mk4 astra or even a vauxhall of any kind.

I think the mk4 astra has a nicer interior to spend your time in etc but I'd have to agree with others and go with the Golf also. I've got the 3 door hatch version and its done around 264,000 km's and still going strong. Couldnt give you figures on MPG but for my high mileage commute it seems very reasonable and always starts without issue in Finlands finest winters. A reliable old thing and goes pretty well for what it is.

Owned both in petrol versions. Golf on all accounts. The Astra felt more modern. But the golf has so much more pontential

Thanks for the help guys. I bought the astra and it is so nice on the motorway and the interior is so nice but its having problems and its annoying me now and I don't see it as a reliable car. This golf has sailed through its two previous mots fine with the only advisories being the front tyres, I can't clearly see any rust on it either.
Does anybody know if the insurance groups differ much?
