I've recently fitted some Spax Krypton coilovers to my nova (the old ebay specials just aren't the same in terms of quality) that have solid rally top mounts. This might sound silly, but would it be possible to re-mount the coilovers with the top mount actually above the inner wing? Would mean putting the bolts through from the top, but is there a reason for not doing it? I'd imagine it might not be safe because the weight would effectively only be held by the top mount bolts, but would be good to know. Sorry little difficult to explain with words! so the blue top mount, could it be used to mount the coilover but from the top side of the inner wing with the bots coming through from above?

What size bolts are they and how many is there? My main concern would be the bolts pulling through the steel of the strut tower. I'd have thought that if you were to bolt though into a spreader plate under the mount, (to sandwich the tower) with 3 or more sufficiently strong bolts, it'd be fine. I've seen it done on racing cars a few times, but always with strut towers designed for it, or with sandwich plates.

That was my main concern, unfortunately these only have 2 bolts! I guess it'll be too much stress on a small area, and probably result in a bent strut tower top, if not the entire unit coming out the top.

yes you can, WRC cars tend to have them like this, makes damper changes easier and faster sometimes.
you will need to reinforce the top mounts with some plate, 3 or 4mm, and add more bolts to the top mounts, seems to be the number commonly used.

Thanks, that's interesting. Might look into doing that in the long term, I'd imagine it'd all be pretty string with extra metal and mounting points.

Due to how it would be taking the load, use 6mm steel, with nuts welded to it (don't try to thread the spacer material, it'll quite possibly end in tears!) Drill another pair of hole to bring it upto 4 holes. Add some tiger seal to the top of it, and bolt it all together - that way the spacers should stay put if you ever need to remove the struts Depending on the size of the hole in the strut tower, you may even be able to just drop it in from the top! Damned sight easier

Just make a new strut top cut and weld jobby, or get some shorter inserts Bit like this volvo the bottom weld is were the standard strut top ends

nice one, thanks everyone! I'm inclined to think have a welded on "extension" (as above) to the strut tower does seem a better idea overall.
