175/60R16 nankang NS2. I want em nicely steeeeeeeeretched over my steels, I'm making the wheels myself (NOT banding..) so offset wont be a problem. do those whove done much tyre stretching think 9J will be too wide to stretch em? that 1" of stretch in each sidewall on a tyre with a theoretical sidewall of 4" or would I be better off copping out and going 8J or 8.5J? or could I even go to 10"? ive not stretched tyres like this before....

175's on 9J sounds like far too much to me. Would've thought it's too much for 8J to be honest.

Few more specifics would help a little like car and offset etc to determine what may be poss, but how about just wider rubber once its done. 195 on 8 should work (its normal on 7's) but will be quite descreet so it may work on 9's. await the advice of experts...

it doesn't matter if it's a Morris Marina or a Toyota Celica - it's what you do with it that counts

It should work,.. I'd be tempted to go for 8.5j with 175/65 ,.. the taller side wall gives you a more visible stretch, but means there isn't such pressure on the sidewalls...
If you go really radical stretch consider putting rally inner tubes in for that added safety.

car is a very low '76 merc w115. offset will be done to suit, to get the car almost sitting tyre on arch but not quite, and so i can still steer. arches will be rolled/dollied as well. but i don't see how the offset has any consequence on what can or cant be stretched.
i don't think 195s on an 8J will be enough, the rim bed will be 5mm wider than the tyre, hardly much of a stretch... and 175/65 don't exist as a tyre size.
I'm planning to tube em anyway.

No the offset does not really matter if you have done your 'math' which am sure you have. just a wider tyre (like my 195 suggestion) with your current working outs may clash with the arch thats all. Plus people on here may have some exact examples for you too. didnt want to mess ya plans. seen some extreme stretch on here so 175 on 8 maybe ok sounds like you have it all planned. very impressed with this custom wheel business

ile take example pics of any size on any rim as theyll all help me firure out my final width.
i tried serching but i could only find this thread and one other with a passing reference to tyre stretching.
the wheels I'm making are very simple. it can be done with an angle grinder, a bit cleverness with a jig, and a good welder+operator.

If you are tubing them,.. 175 on the 9j is the way forwards... extreme strech machine..

195`s on a 8" wide rim is the "norm" over here at least, that or 175\50`s, on 13" wheels that is. I run 195\55`s on my 8x13" ATS`s on my manta, wich gives a nice stretch, but i think it would look far sweeter on a 9" wide wheel. Going for 195\55`s on 9x13" Revo`s on my Rekord Coup i think.

Go over to forums.vwvortex.com/zerosearch and do a search for 'tire stretch' whilst checking the 'archived content' box. They like a low profile stretch over there, but it's interesting reading anyway!

Ok boys, I haven't read most of this, but here is a picture of a dude's Chevette in our club. These are 175/50R13s on an 8" wide rim. Looks great in my opinion!

I was looking to run 165/65 on an 8". Not tried it yet but i think its going to be an innertube job.

I don't get why you'd want to run such a high profile? 175 60 on a 8 or 9J will look incorrect.
Since your making the wheels...
I suggest 8.5s front and 9s back, both with 195 40 or 195 45 tyres. Would look lovely. A 195 on a 9J is a bit much as is, let alone a 175.

The Japanese run with a higher profile,.. it gives a much more prounounced stretch,.. its why the tyres looks so much more stretched than they really are...

The low-profile stretch look always looks scarier than the high profile one, but doesn't always look better IMO. If you pick up an old copy of Hot Car (late 60s) or similar you'll see loads of companies selling wide (banded, mostly - up to 10"!) wheels, but no source for wide tyres, in fact radials were state-of-the-art then so most people would be buying crossplies to fit those wide wheels!. The stretch look is proper retro, the lowriders have a similar story to tell. A set of 13x7s with 5.20 crossplies is still the set up to have on a proper lowrider: They're not very wide before the stretch: These ones are tiny!: The modern equivalent would be the 13x7 with 155/80:
