i have one of the old dunlop metal pointer jobbies which is fine if you can actually get in under the car. good for open wheels hotrods, totally useless on a lupo with 1.5" ground clearance. ive been looking at the trackace, i know i can build the same thing with a lazer level and a few bits of wood, but the adjustability/convenience is worth the money tbh. but, has anyone used one on a really low car? I'm not sure it will swing down low enough to enable the lazer to point under the car. or would i be best off messing about the old fashioned way with a string box and a lot of measuring?

Maybe look at a Dunlop gauge (or that style). Bought one for DIY use and it's been great and can't envisage any problems with lowered cars.

I have a trackace which works really well, but my cars are not that low. The laser is about 4 inches off the floor, and it needs to shine across perhaps 8 inches infront of the front wheels. Maths isnt my strong point, but I see no reason why you couldnt extend the bar that the mirror is fixed to so the whole lot protrudes beyond the front of the car......

iain, i have the older/simpler dunlop toe gauge. I'm not talking the £350+ plus dunlop ones, out of my budget for what i use it for. I'm talking sub £100.
dave, its the measurement under the car issue I'm concerned with. is there any way of making the laser shine lower than 4"? ive got around 1.5" clearance under the car. ile have to send em a mail to see what they think about increasing the length of the bars, but i think it would make it less accurate the longer they got.

Had a peek at mine this morning again. I don't see why you couldnt use it upside down.....that would put the laser right on the deck. Have the mirror on the other wheel as low as it will go so its at floor level too and it should still work. Would have to reverse the scale on it though as if its upside down then toe in will read as toe out and vice versa.
It wouldnt be quite as easy as using it normally - you would need to be careful when positioning the laser so it sits stable - perhaps make a wee cradle for it, but its certainly possible.
