When I bought the Fiat off Emdee I knew that the turbo bearings were screaming their tits off at full boost. It's not getting any worse, but I want to do a few bits to up the power so want it to be 100%.
Is it possible to rebuild the turbo myself? Its a Garrett GT1749V. I've seen rebuild kits which seem to start at about £20 but no point getting one if it's not something I can do myself.
I assume that i'll have to get it rebalanced afterwards which isn't a problem, but anything else I should be aware of?

Theres a place in birmingham who rebuild tubs for about £100 inc all ballance work ill try and get you a number. They do postage as well.
Otherwise nothing complex about it really, just note the order of removal for the washers and springs. Might need a bit of heat to undo some nuts

I thought you only need to balance if you replace any of the rotating bits, if the rotating bits go back on in the same place then you can do what you like, have a look on youtube as there's loads of videos detailing strip and rebuild of various units.

If you want to have a go at rebuilding it yourself, check first that there is no excessive wear or damage, if all good and it's just the bearings, mark the compressor wheel for alignment and you should be alright.
It's pointless rebuilding the turbo yourself if the shaft has worn, and a waste of money to get the rebuild kit and then have to send it off to be rebuilt and balanced professionally.

if you take it apart, the nut WILL go back to a different position to which it was balanced in. It's impossible to put it back to the "original" balance. All garretts are balanced after construction - but Mitsibushi turbos IIRC, are individually balanced, so it's possible to take them apart, and put them back together.
also, the cheap+nasty bearing kits you see on ebay, are just that... nasty. Poor quality materials, less tolerances, poor surface finishing, etc, etc.
If you're going to rebuild it, I'd actually say find a donor turbo (GT15/17/18/20/22) with good bearings, and swap them over. Used genuine parts, are better than new cheap parts
If you don't get it properly balanced afterwards - it'll only last a few thousand miles before lunching the bearings
