Toying with having a different engine fitted to my Reliant kitten something along the lines of a MX5 I would remove the original engine/gearbox so i would need someone to make engine/gearbox mounts, fit the engine in place and a new prop.I can do wiring and fuel side of things.Any idea on costs please? Reccomendations of someone to carry out the work would be good too in and around Cumbria?

any competent back street garage with a decent welder should be able to make some mounts - they wont likely be pretty, but they should do the job.
ive seen it done before - the guy cut off the bits of the cars original mounts that bolt to the car & the bits of the engines original mounts that connect to the engine (the rest of both sets of original mounts were then binned) he meaured it all and then made a cardboard template for each side and then using that design he "connected the bits of old mount together" as I said, pretty they werent - but they were very very strong and did the job

Hi mate I no someone in welwyn garden city who is more than able to do that for you he dose hotrod builds and conversions but he is located in welwyn garden city, hertfordshire.. I'm doing a similar project with a kitten but useing a swift gti engine. Id say buy a whole rot box mx5 then ur good to go from there. Shouldent be a big job just depends where the mounts are located on the engine Take a look if you want mate see if u can get any ideas :-) retrorides.proboards.com/indexcgi?action=display&board=readersrides&thread=138223&page=1

The issue with the mx5 motor is the intake side clashing with the pedal box and any hacking of the bulkhead seriously weakens it so best bet would be pull the body off and get the engine/box in position which would mean chopping the centre out of the chassis and re building it to take the gearbox then lower the shell back down to see where you need to make room around the bulkhead .
I measured up an mx5 to go in my spare van and I can't see it working without getting rid of the factory bulkhead and starting again .

I used to have a Salamander which was low production vehicle based on a Kitten chassis fitted with Ford C3 autobox and 1100cc Kent Engine. The chassis required quite a bit of modifications to get enough room for fitment of the alternative engine & gearbox combo so would expect the same with MX5 items. Doubt you'd get away without cutting out most of bulkhead and tunnel though as the original Reliant items are quite compact and looking at pics of MX5 mechanicals they are a bit larger.

Thanks alot guys definatly don't want major surgery to the chassis a bike engine is outa the question (but would be oh soo simple) Hows about a capaccino 660 tuuurbo engine?

Why not mod the Reliant engine. After all popular with 750 racers so plenty of into about them. Also if you want a small alternative the 940cc Sunbeam engine is a worthy contender. Upright version of the Imp lump but stronger and again plenty about tuning Imp stuff.

What you need is an engineering place. Make some mock ups, whether out of card tinplate etc, and go show em what you want. They'll do a better job than a 'back street' garage.

U could also try a 3cylinder suzuki engine g10 block they fit the suzuki sj/samuari gearbox, u can use sj mounts and u can also turbo them useing the 8v vitara pistons and swift gti rods, u can get 150bhp out of them without too much trouble
Would hafto mod the bulkhead and tunnel to fit the box but its doable and all fits in nicely between the footwells as its the same width as the gti engine i have in mine ;-)
