Hi everyone, just a quick question. Has anyone any experience with a paint job done with just a metallic base coat and no lacquer? I painted a car this way (not deliberately, too little lacquer) a couple years ago and it looked fine, not what I wanted but fine but now I think it might look quite good on my mx5 and give a different look without the hassle of painting door shuts/bay/boot which really bugs me if the colours are different. Anyway ill stop rambling, any help or advice on potential problems gratefully Recieved, ta

Ah thanks, that was what I was wondering, I thought it wouldn't be as simple as just leaving out the clear coat stage. Thanks for your help

my mate jay was the first person i ever saw messing around with such things. his bug is pretty well known-  not sure how he did it, matting agent in the laquer i think. |

That looks ace, cheers. I like the look a lot and as I said I was hoping to be a straightforward ish solution. Wile looking cool too.

yep need the clear coat , basecoat would scratch off and mark terribly in no time

If you want to spare yourself the cost of the satin clear coat, but still want a strong enuff paint job that wont stain, or scratch if you look at it too hard, the old school trick is to add 10% hardener on the basecoat.
I'm not 100% positive on the %age, but i can find out quick enuff youre intrested.
It does work.

A lot of years ago I had a V8 Austin A30 which we painted with grey primer with a little maroon gloss mixed in, topped with turquoise metallic scallops with no lacquer. It looked great. I've a picture but can't get them up on here.

I wasnt too far. He said from 10% to 15% max. I have been thinking about this sort of finish for my van when I have gathered the panels, I fancy a matt met grey Tinted primer is kool, but will absorb moisture and cause rust issues. I know well, my bucket as been in primer for almost 2 years now, and when i'll finally paint it i will have to completley re-do it  |
