Worst of all, the bloke's got 55k posts, and most of the replies to the read are telling him what a good job he's done.

I don't think it's always laziness, before I used to read up on things on the internet I used to use pog to fill in rust holes. The repairs lasted a good amount of years too I might add when I later pulled them out to weld them properly.
I think the problem is more education, in the states especially I image there's vast remote areas where they've not even heard of cheap portable mig welders. We have a problem with road salt in this country which is why we are more aware that pog repairs simply don't stand up. The structural thing is another matter but again that comes down to education.
Also don't forget that the AA/RAC used to recommend the use of concrete/plywood/mesh back before cheap welders were available. Hense the "concrete car" at Area52.

Yup, an old series Land Rover I used to own had a chassis largely composed of large amounts of filler Looking back now, it's real luck nothing bad happened. The experience also introduced me to galvanised metal though Ian

what bugs me most about the benzworld thing is the pic where he's put the primer on and says its ready for paint the next day.... Ignoring the complete and utter ghetto nature of the repair, the prep work is absolutely shocking! a blind monkey with a hammer could have gotten that smoother and in a better shape!!

Now I'm not one to judge as I've bodged lots of stuff, but that is mental. Plus given the guys 55,000 post count on a MB forum you'd assume he was an enthusiast? Clearly not! Although the other forum member (bar one) seem to be happy with that work
