I've got a Clarke Pro 90amp MIG which until about a week ago I was really happy with, now it seems to be giving me problems.
Basically it works fine for the first 2-3 minutes, then it starts to spitting and the penetration is poor. If you leave it ages until it cools down it seems to be fine again. Is something over heating? Does it need servicing?
Thanks Robin

Sounds wire-feed-y. Have you checked the tip? Could be a bit tight and the heat is just enough to cause the wire to bind.

Hi, I got same Pro 90 (bought new about 5 years ago - now using pub c02) and only problems I had were from holding the tip too close to the workpiece and getting splatter on it Found either taking the tip off and running a smaill pilot drill through to clean it - of fit new tip - worked fine. Thinking of the obvious stuff - don't suppose you've kinked the hose or anything recently ? If in doubt ask the (very frienedly and helpful) experts www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=13

Might be worth taking the other panel off (where all the gubbins are) and give it a (gentle) going over with an airline.
If it was anything like mine (clarke 100) it was covered in accumalated dust and grindings etc .... so the heat sinks were not exactly performing to well ...
Otherwise i'd suspect the wire feed mech.

Sounds like a dodgy earth, check the clamp, in fact replace it with a decent one, they are carp standard, pay a fiver for a proper one!
Check earth lead
Change to a new tip, use the proper size tip
Check feed wire is smooth, replace liner if it isn't
Give it some love! ;D

Also double check that there's enough pressure on the wire at the feed wheel, mine was not feeding in properly and I put a M6 nut on the end of the bolt that maintains the pressure and it was like having a new welder :-D

I've not got a Clarke welder and its a bit bigger, but I used to have a devil of a job with thin wire. Tried 0.6 instead of 0.8 and it used to have almost constant feed and burn-back problems. Put it back to 0.8 with correct tip etc and it was fine.

I had a right song and dance with mine over christmas. Took me about 2 days to weld up a bit of angle iron ! In the end i took it to the local fabricators that i buy my steel off. The chap there had a look at it, replaced the nut that holds on the spool of wire for a longer one, tightened everything up, changed the tip adaptor for a new one and charged me £20. Been better than its ever been since i bought it second hand from an auction. So if you can find a local fabricators, and get them to look at it and not charge the earth i would recommend that as an option. No substitute for experience.
