Basically, I'm sure this may have been asked in some way shape or form before but..... I'm looking for some more info, wondered if anyone can help.
Basically there are a few small holes in the centre box of my exhaust, nothing major but would like them fixed up. I had some gum repair putty so put some of that on, now as it's on the silencer I was wondering if theres anything I can put over that to create a more solid seal, to hold the gum better? I was thinking something like the metalish sheets they use in the kits for the exhaust pipes but bigger or/and for something to cover it. Is there any such product as tape for the exhaust?
thank you in advance!! ;D

gungum paste normally blows out pretty quickly, the tape last a little longer. The only way I have ever managed to effect a semi long lasting repair on an exhaust system was via welding.

Or weld a patch over it. Or have someone do it, doesn't take more than a couple of minutes

P40 lasts for a while, I got a Mk2 transit from london to sheffield with the down pipe held into the first box with it but that eventually stress cracked, in a box it would last a lot longer (and has) I think the longest was a few months in a tail box ;D

Thanks for the replies guys!
Ive tried the bandage technique from the kits before with no luck but over the gum it might create a better seal (that and I soaked the bandage by accident last time!!)
Althoughhhh....ive just seen some alluminium tape which is heat proof, water proof, rust proof ect that may be a better cheaper way to cover the gum just to creat a tighter seal. The gum stuff although from what people on here have said and ive read isnt the longest lasting thing but having prepped it pretty well with sanding and stamped it on using different spreaders I'm hoping it might hold for a while longer. Plus it'll be cheap! (3 quid or so!)
Out of interest this silicone stuff, how much are we talking about? is it specifically for exhausts?
Thank you once again for the replies!

replace silencer with a bit of steel pipe on the cheap You could buy a similar diameter with two ends that would clamp on for the same price as a repair kit and it would last ages

Seriously? How much is a new silencer? By the time you've finished messing about you may as well have put a new one on it.

I know its a bit crude but... It worked on my old polo 6n mid box. 1 heinz beans tin, 2 jubilee clips and exhaust paste Take both ends off the been tin then split down one side. Open out, spread with paste and fit to the can. Halfords do large jubilee clips that should go round the box.

Two big jubilee clips, a roll of aly tape, and a tub of exhaust paste from halfords would set you back the best part of £50, and would probably make a decent job of covering the hole for a few hundred miles, maybe 1000 if you are lucky. What would a new exhaust box cost?

Don't forget the time part. Doing the job twice is never a pleasant prospect. What car is it? Maybe eBay will be your friend in this case (FWIW, I got a complete Janspeed stainless exhaust system for my 106 GTi for £70 including the decat pipe. Whilst I know not all jobs can go as smoothly I reckon it took me less time to put the entire system on than it would have done to be fixing my existing system (it took me about 20 minutes to mount and finish putting on that exhaust system).

What would a new exhaust box cost? ....around the £50-60 quid mark fitted? Iv'e paid £3 for the gum and I'm going to spend another £3 on some exhaust tape.....so £6 Its not really that bad so don't want to replace it while it's still got some miles in it, just wanted to smooth it over. Thanks for everyone else who posted, much appreciated! Have seen the tin can effort before but thats probably for something a little bigger than the repair I need (about the size of 5p's if that!) but handy to know!

I did consider getting some off the bay before (and thats a decent price you paid for that!) I had seen one for around £15 + postage(£12) which looked pretty new but I don't have ramps atm and a slanty drive! but can fit under it while its on the floor whilst stretching! (just about)....it was a pain but most of it has been patched pretty well, just need to get something to make it look a bit more finished really! The thing thats always put me off doing exhausts in the drive too is if I can't get it off! I don't really have resources to get it to budge if it fails!! Thankyou for the input tho

In all honesty if its started to pinhole its time to replace that section if you can, exhausts tend to rust from the inside, fix one hole it will blow another, fix that it blows out the first or blows another, do you really want to be chasing it just fit a new silencer section. Shop around and you will get one cheap. I just got a full system for my Mitsubishi l200 for £125 from my local motorfactors.
