Hi guys,
Looking at getting an escort estate and my dad has a 1.6 which he would give me just needs a bit of welding. I have been looking at the 1.4 litre versions too as the insurance and tax would be a little cheaper. Are they both the same type of engine and are they both as reliable as one another. I have had a 1.3 hatch and it was bombproof and my dad has had a string of 1.6's and they have been ace too. Just don't know about the 1.4?
I would appreciate any advice.
Regards Tom

1.6 is the better engine, smoother, quicker and is much better on fuel

as matt said , the 1400 is under powered for the cars size and you will notice this on hills , ive had a few and on steep hills on moterways the 1400 suffered , the 1600 is miles better,.

A 1.4 in good condition is not that that bad, I had to go up the hill out of Alderley Edge every morning, it a third gear 30mph hill about 1 mile long, engine runs perfect, you just don't go over 30 mph, but then again it a 30mph zone ! And of course the Tax and Insurance is less and when you want you can always pop in a Zetec 1600 or 2000 !

As said the 1400 isn't bad in the late scort because ford fitted it with electronic fuel injection
If its a carb'd 1400 walk away and get the 1600
I love my little 1400 mk4 it's lively and quiet but it is juicy for what it is

1400 in the mk4 Escort Orion is perfectly acceptable, I used to run an Orion Equipe and it used to do quite well. The extra weight of the MK6 blunts performance though.
The carb engine in the mk4s are good and the later multipoint injection is good too, the one to avoid is the single point injection

Had the 1.4 cvh in a mk6 and after id worked out the cat was blocked I gutted it and it went really well but of course that would be an mot fail. Was good on juice after that as well. The 1.6 is also very underpowered and juicy so devil and deep blue sea.
The good thing is the engine swap choice is unlimited really for pence.

Which generation of Escort are you going for?
After driving a few Mk5 and Mk6s (a 1994 1.6 16v, 1993 1.4 CFI and a 1997 1.4 PTE engine), I would say that the 1.4s are not too bad if they are well serviced. Unfortunately the CVH derived engines do not take a lack of servicing well, which many will have fallen victim to.
When I drove my grandad's 1.6 16v around, it was a little pokier than the 1.4 but it was also better on fuel IMO. Cambelt changes only need to be done half as much on the Zetec as they do on the CVHs (which are known for having short belt intervals (disregard that information at your peril).
If you are going for a MkIV I would simply go for the best example you can find. Whilst a well setup 1.6 will be superior to a 1.4, a knackered distributor and a neglected engine will feel rubbish, regardless of which engine you go for.

don't get the 1.4, I had one mk6 named Escargot because it was so slow. The 1.4 hatch didnt have any rear anti roll bar only the 1.6 upwards got that, might be the same with the estates.

I ran a MKVI 1.6 for a while and it was a cracking little car. All a zetec ever needs is fresh oil now and then and it's night on unbreakable. As others have said, more power than the 1.4, smoother, better on fuel.
Mine had a broken fan switch and a split header tank and it used to sit in traffic steaming gently.
