Hey all, long time no see.
As usual I spent the first weekend of the New Year hanging off the fence at the Summernats Burnout Pit. And I highly highly highly recommend going - it's one of those "I can't believe it" shows. You'll spend most of your time with your jaw on the floor. Because no matter how nice the cars are - they all get driven. Around the the show is "the cruise route" - where the best cars in Oz do laps, haze the tyres and basically have a grand time. The only caveat would be to watch yourself on "Tuff Street" saturday afternoon, it can get a bit hairy.
To clear things up (in order).
1) The green Cortina (ENVY) was one of the Meguiars Uncovers this year. Half a dozen to a dozen cars get unveilled to the 'Nats crowd - never before seen in public and they are all incredible. That was built for a customer by Paul Bennett and every inch is flat out incredible, especially the interior.
2) The black and flamed Mustang (kinda graffiti'd vinyl wrap this year) is none other than Gary Myers Burnout Mustang (GM176). Search youtube and you'll find tonnes of videos of this thing bouncing off the rev limiter and destroying tyres. Has won every title in burnouts, has his own show devoted to burnouts (Gazzanats). The original, and to my mind, still the best.
3) The Shannons Citycruise is the opening for the show. They leave EPIC which is on the northern end of Northbourne Avenue and go for a lap of Canberra. Was led this year by ZERO'D - an incredible show XR Falcon powered by a 6 odd litre turbo'd diesel. Another car that will bend your head. It also won Grand Champion this year.
4) BMW13B does have a 13B turbo. And it smoked the tyres quite respectably on the cruise strip.
5) NIKOFF is pure fun. In the front is a 308ci Holden V8. That's 5.0 litres of V8 with twin turbos. No, it's not registered.
6) BADDOG is chev-powered IIRC - often seen killing tyres on the burnout pad.
7) FROMHELL (the orange Commodore) was new this year. Didn't get a chance to see it properly, but I do know that the engine was in (and above) the bay for less than a week before it started shredding tyres at the 'Nats.
8) The tent with MRMETH is a tent of burnout cars. As you say, nearly everything at the 'Nats is V8'd, blown, methanol'd and run with very little muffling. It is wonderful.
9) SIKGMA debuted the twin blower setup this year. Still has teething problems - or he couldn't get used to the new track - 'cause the burnout was nowhere near the usual standard. Still, lovely to see a V8 in a Sigma (Galant).
10) The blue and silver van is TOASTR. A Suzuki Carry with an LS1 in it. Built to shred rubber, known for lifting the front tyres off the deck mid-burnout and amazingly quick donuts. This year - he rolled.
11) Believe it or not that white Camaro with the orange stripes is a: a shed build. b: a young blokes first car. The interior is gorgeous. Was in the running for Grand Champion.
12) CULADA is the front view of NIKOFF from before. See, I wasn't lying about the twin turbos!
13) CMY037 is another staple of the burnout pad. I passed it on the way home up the Hume last year - not on a trailer either.
14) YLDTOY is Tony D'Olivera's Corolla. Amazingly, it used to be registered with a 308 in it. Now it's a pure burnout car and his car control is to be seen to be believed.
15) ARMYGEDDON is a recruitment tool built by the Australian Army. Yes it does burnouts. Yes it smokes all four rear wheels doing it. Now the Army has PROJECT DIGGER, a Fairlane, it tends not to do too many smokeshows.
16) 02SKD is another burnout car from Queensland. Only has 600 horsepower at the wheels - there's a Dyno show as part of the 'Nats.
17) WAR440 is Mark Arblaster's Valiant. Powered by a supercharged big block, it makes something around 1700 horsepower. Won Tuff Street last year - was built to do Drag Week in the USA. Didn't make it last year because WSID (Western Sydney International Dragway) was being resurfaced. Didn't make it this year because he broke it and didn't have time to fix it. If you search youtube there's about 15 videos on the build of this car.
18) Gary Myers doing what he does best. Amazingly he placed 2 cars GM176 and XACUTER in the top ten of the Burnout Masters.
And finally my view, on the fence of the burnout pad for the 69 car burnout. Apologies for the sound, it is kinda hard on the phone-camera when 69 burnout cars go bananas. So turn the volume way down. At 40 seconds the smoke was so thick I couldn't see my hands in front of my face. Not the place you want to go visit if you don't like/can't inhale smoke.
