Hi all,
Been offered a mk3 fiesta (1.1 or 1.3 pov spec IIRC) with a seized up engine by a workmate who just wants it cleared off her drive.
I know nothing about Fords, but a little preliminary research would suggest a 1.6 or 1.8 zetec from a fiesta or escort of similar age should pretty much drop in? Fancy making it a little more fruity, but don't really know my options. This would be a proper budget bit of tinkering so I don't want to be sourcing too many bits...
Suggestions?

Any of the cvh or zetec range will go in, the biggest zetec available from new in the mk3 was the 1800 in the rs, the 1600 also featured in the ghia and java models. plenty of 1600 si's etc in breakers, this would be the best option as you can swap everything over, unless you find an rs1800, the 1400si was electronically fuel injected too on a cvh easy to work on, and an ideal budget build car.

So I'd be better off finding an entire donor Escort for example? There seem to be plenty about...

doner mk5/5b escort or mk3 fez xr2i/rs1800 , you can use the 2.0 too with some parts swapping, if your car is a mk3 injection car then the mk3 fez engine looms plug straight in , curse word easy to do ,.

Yeah, all that Ford FWD stuff of that era, will physically swap easily into another Ford FWD of the era. I had a Quantum 2+2 kitcar based on an '86 Mk2 Fiesta XR2, and fitted the 1.6 Zetec from a '93 Escort, complete with Escort gearbox. The gearbox is physically similar, just a little beefed up inside : so much so, the original driveshafts will fit straight back in.
The 1.6 is only 90bhp, which isn't much even by the standards of other 1.6 engines of the day, mind. But the Escort will be a cheap donor.
2.0 is a trickier option. Guys fitting those in Quantums were better off sourcing a 1.6 or 1.8 TOO, so they could get the correct bits to bolt on the outside. If you're going economical build, I'd drop thoughts of 2.0.
