Mates just bought a 1978 lorry from York airport. He is planning on driving it home to Ireland. He has it insured, but is not sure on tax and test? Does a vehicle of this vintage need a test? Is it tax exempt?

On that age, AFAIK you're not exempt from anything. You don't give the GVW tho, so it's difficult to give a concise answer

Remind him it'll trigger every ANPR camera, both static and mobile / in Police cars, on the way back if no tax.

from reading posts on here can you book mot in say hollyhead drive it too test center then jump the ferry to eire once on this side should be ok to get ya home well down south anyway just a guess so wait for defo answer from someone that side off the pond

What lorry is it? And what is he going to use it for? Once you know the answers to those questions, you can decide which mot test it needs, and what to tax it as.

once got to southren ireland it's vintage/classic tax and mot/doe exempt so even a tow to the ferry will do

What licence has he got, and is it a 4 ton GVW or curb weight? For the record- provided it's running empty, not used commercially etc, I believe it's the first of Jan 1960 that's the magic date. Earlier than that and you can drive any weight of lorry on a car license and without an MOT- which is why I can drive the beastie below, even though I can't drive a modern 7 1/2 tonner. Tax exemption is the same as for cars, 1973. I went to check and the DVLA website has been idiot- proofed which now means it's impossible to find anything useful out- it's just informed me that to drive a truck I need a truck licence, which didn't take a great deal of imagination to work out and anyway is wrong in some situations... Yours truly acting as power steering...

About the only exceptions:- if its motorhome or something like that, or real old lorries where they weren't fitted with tachos etc, Not sure about recovery wagon rules.

Pretty sure recovery trucks need a tacho, I spent 5 or so hours on the side of the A34 because the RAC were struggling to find a driver with enough time on his cards to take me home. (Stupid thing was it was a 900kg car, they could have easily thrown me on a sub 3.5 ton van based beaver-tail and trundled down at 70 with no such worries.)

Can you register it on irish plates before leaving york, that way it doesnt matter then? - not sure if thats feasible in the time frame you have.

It's not as clear cut as that though even now, there are all sorts of loop holes/exemptions you can claim for to get round having to have a calibrated tacho on some good vehicles. My dad runs two lorries for business & they're exempt as they don't run outside x km radius of the Operators licence address.

Possibly but the mileage isn't that big, and IIRC most exemptions applied to recovery firms, garages making repairs to the vehicle, fish industry, livestock and agriculture. The firm I work for is agricultural based but the exemption is only about 30km within the operators base.
The point I was trying to make originally and possibly not very well. If it had been a lorry over 7.5tons GVW and newer than 1960, he should by law use a tacho. The law on drivers hours is very clear on this and no longer makes any distinction between personal use and employment/business use. Any tacho exemptions would only apply legally in business mode.
I must also apologise to the OP as I missed his post about the lorry only weighing 4 tons when I first posted. So makes all this irrelevant in his case.
