Hello,
I've recently converted the 1Z engine in my Audi 80 to m-tdi, using a bosch VE pump from a 300tdi Landy. Anyway, it's smoking a lot at all revs and has no power above 2k rmp. After playing around with the fuelling, i.e. cranking it right down until the engine stalls, I've come to the conclusion it's an air feed problem.
Before I pull the turbo off, is it likely that its a stuck turbo waste gate or is there another likely culprit?
Thanks, OP.

need to know the colour of the smoke.

the colour of the smoke is blue i'd say

I should probably point out that the previous owner had been running it on veg oil, as it reeked for a few weeks after picking it up

blue is engine oil - black is overfuelling - white is steam (usually dead HG)
Could be a dead turbo I'm afraid - whip it off, and see if you still get smoke from the exhaust, as well as being able to physically check the condition of the turbo
Quick question - did you use the flange+wheel from the 300tdi? Or did the original one swap straight over? Currently doing this myself on a vw lump

Whats the advantage of this conversion, the IZ can run on chip fat and return 55+ MPG easy enough?

I bought the car off here as a non- runner, suspected fuel pump problem. Anyway, after replacing the fuel pump and arsing about with vag com and flash codes unsuccessfully I decided to go m-tdi as i had the parts already, eliminating anything electrical to do with the engine by copying this conversion. switchamotor.blogspot.se/search/label/pickup%20TDIThanks chairchild, that's the next step The pulley is off the audi pump, I had the engine-pump mounting bracket modified by a machine shop (the audi bracket) ,The bracket was bored out and the holes slotted to allow for timing adjustment, that part seems to have worked at least.

That's a pretty useful page - shows that at least I'm on the right track! Lol We didn't have to machine the pump mounting bracket, as we've just got the later-spec bracket (the hole's big enough for the pump to fit) and the support bracket that bolts to the high pressure head, is just going to be held in place by two bolts - not going to bother drilling out the two smaller holes. So that's just a few bolts to undo Swapping the delivery valves was also done - but were swapped for the valves off a 1.6, rather than the 1.9, as they have a design that will flow more fuel. Gonna mark up the shaft, remove the tdi flange, and see if the vw one, does indeed fit (the tdi flange has a different centre bore size, so the sprocket isn't being held central). We're going to just use the later-spec sprocket, so we can adjust timing with that, rather than pivoting the whole pump. Funny thing I found out too - you can make the electronic pump "run" with just a cheapo £5 ebay motor controller and it's what I intend to do on my diesel mgf in a year or two

Sorry I haven't been back to update this, been moving house, the short days haven't helped either. But it's still in progress!

Sounds like the timing might be out?

Very usefully info on this thread and in that web link. Do you have a link to the ebay motor controller? Not specifically - plus it turns out they're not *that* well built anyway 12v regulator fried MOSFET fried heatsinks they fitted were FAR too small so... I "fixed" the board, by removing all unnecessary parts, and remotely fitted a new MOSFET to an old xbox 360 heatsink (this particular one is being used for my heater speed control) Lol, and in no way, would I EVER consider controlling a roadgoing car with one of these.... Far too much to go wrong, and zero mapping. The further you put your foot down, the more fuel goes in... period!

Ok, I have pulled the turbo and it looks to be in good condition by my very amateur eye. Turned the engine over and it still smokes like hells bells, as well as spewing oil every where. 180k miles, tooth on the starter ring missing, engine out time by my reckoning.

if it's black smoke, then I'd have to agree - if the timing's too late. You also say it's "spewing oil every where" but where from? Multiple gasket failures? Out the exhaust? etc,etc

Out of the turbo oil feed line due to not blanking it off, I know, I know.
Before removing the turbo I had screwed the fuel limiter right in until the engine stalled, whilst the smoke was reduced is was still there until the engine cut out, I'd reason that this indicates fuelling isn't the problem.
I ran the engine without either manifold attached after removing the turbo, possibly a very bad idea? Anyway, thick blue smoke covered the engine bay immediately.
A replacement engine seems to me the neatest solution here, or rebuild, but the high mileage is off-putting.

tbh, as long as you blank off the oil feed (you numpty, lol) slap on the intake manifold so it's breathing from a different location, and let it run for a minute or so. If you're still getting blue smoke, it's a bit on the dead side I'm afraid 1Z's can be picked up for £200,which is cheaper than a full rebuild!

Test, take 2. With visual of offending carcinogens. New engine it is.. Thanks again and I hope your build is progressing better!

I should mention, if anyone would like a donor vehicle for an engine conversion, I wouldn't be too sorry to see this go! Ha

if you were closer, I wouldn't mind grabbing it for parts lol Or...would you be willing to sell one or two minor parts?

How long has it been stood for, have you run it up to temperature for a while? It may clear once it has been run...Its not got a tank full of contaminated diesel has it?
