May sound stupid, but the ride quality on the rear of my BMW E39 tourer has gone to pot, it feels like its rock hard. I know its got self levelling air suspension, the suspension goes up and down, has anyone heard of shocks going hard when the get old, 200k+miles

Most shocks ive changed tend to go soft rather than hard when they wear out with the notable exception of my DAF where the front strut siezed solid, cause was dirt in the strut oil blocking the valves.

They did go hard on my Mondeo V6 (although they were Nivomats, so more akin to what Volvos come with). I changed them at 280k for normal items.
I look forward to the day I change them on my current Mondy. £250 each! To be fair I did get my use out of them many a time out of the Green Goddess/Mondeo of doom (It took two engines as if they were not there (One of them was a Porker 944 engine of the 3.0 16v variety, another was a 2.0 Ford Duratec), where most cars prior to that would have bottomed out straight away.
Even with a couple of people who I know that were 20 odd stone they did not bottom out (although the ride height did still drop). The normal setup went straight to the bumpstops in comparison...
