A car scrapped my front bumper today cutting me up in traffic and changing lanes, I followed after him and drove beside him telling him to pull over as he hit me, he's response was I cut him up and he sped away, at this point I had his number plate so I pulled over to inspect any damage to my car.
I have plastic bumpers with no paint, it is dark, but I cant see any damage done to my car. There was a crumpling sound as his car scrapped against mine so I guess he might have ended up with a scrape to his rear door/bumper.
Has anyone had a similar experience? Did they bother reporting it to the police? I doubt he took my numberplate as he sped off pretty quick after the incident and tried he's best to get away from me.
My biggest concern is me getting the blame for the incident if he decides to report it to his insurance company. I really should have stopped straight away and got some witnesses details, but my first instinct was to follow him and get his number plate.

I'd report it to your insurance first but say you don't want to claim. I've done that before when I was arranging a cash settlement from a guy who hit my mini. My insurers didn't act on it and it never got mentioned again, hasnt affected my no claims.

Report to insurance and say you don't want to make a claim. This usually has to be done in the first 24-48 hours. As it can invalidate your policy. Also report at your local police station in the first 24 hours as per the ROad traffic act this has to be done for collisions of this nature and for any collisions with roadside furniture ,mules , pigs , dogs ,sheep , horses, asses goats and cattle. It's usually just a self reporting form but covers you in case the other driver makes spurious claims.

report him for leaving the scene of an accident without giving his details. at the very least he'll get the hassle of a copper knocking on his door this evening and giving him a lecture.
it happened to me, a guy cut me up scraping up the o/s wing/door, then sped off refusing to pull over even when I pulled alongside him and gestured for him to do so. I followed the guy home, phoning the police en route, a traffic copper met me outside his house within minutes, and proceeded to waste a hour and a half of his time giving him a protracted lecture on the road traffic act regarding accidents and what you should do in the event of them, because as the copper put it, he was a 'right dickhead'. its worth doing it for that alone imho.
the quicker you do it after the accident the quicker they are to act in my experience though, as they're as much after catching a drink/drug/uninsured driver in the act as they are helping you to extract the drivers details for insurance purposes.

What he said!
I was driving home one night. I had turned off the motorway onto a busy 3 lane roundabout. I was in the correct middle lane minding my own business when some plank in a Toyota Avensis realised he was going to miss the slip road back onto the motorway. He turned and caught the back of my car spinning me almost 360 degrees. He hammered up the sliproad before I could get his reg number. My back bumper had unclipped on the drivers side but that was it on my car. There was however a big dark blue section of bumper and some chrome headlamp type plastic. Knowing I had caused him more damage was compensation enough, LOL!

plod won't be interested, will say your word against his, no witnesses etc. Thats what I'm thinking, and as theres no damage on my car theres no proof ive done anything. If he finds CCTV footage he'll just be shooting himself in the foot, as my car was stationary when it all happened and he leaves the scene quite quickly. It also looks if I tell my insurance company then my premium will go up I hate to not be doing the right thing, but it seems if I do I might be screwing myself over.

Couple of years ago a learner driver reversed into the front of my car at a roundabout at the top of a steep hill, thinking the learner might pull over to check damage i followed them, the car then sped away and it took me a couple of miles to catch then at some red traffic lights. I asked the learner to stop the engine but i think the instructor used the dual controls to accelerate the car nearly running me over. Best bit was me holding onto the car while it sped off and i was still holding a part of the car - the plastic trim on the roof had come away in my hands ;D strangely after the chase i had gone through the instructor now decided to say he was going to do me for criminal damage and claim off my insurance.

If there's no damage just forget about it. I know it's unfair but I did the same when some beetlejuice looking freak pulled out and clipped the back bumper of my Golf as I was passing. He scraped the bumper a little bit, nothing bad really, but something I needed to put right. He was bricking it and admitted he wasn't looking. I said accidents happen and asked if he wanted to go through the insurance, he didn't want to and said he'd pay for the scrape to be sorted.......then his Wife gets out and starts shouting her mouth off saying they weren't paying anything blah blah blah blah. It was mind boggling as her bloke was completely at fault. Needless to say, I went completely off my head with them. They jumped back in the car and threatened to call the Police. I nearly pulled is door handle off and told him to get his balls out his Wife's handbag. There was a line of traffic building up and I just got in and carried on to work. I had his reg etc but in the end, I just left it. It really bugged me for days after but most of the scrape mopped out and I couldn't be arsed with with insurance companies, having my Golf took to a bodyshop, dealing with Beetlejuice and his missus again, so I left it.

Soon as you tell the insurance company ,Then that means you have been involved in a collision ! Forget it mate . If you tell them your premiums will rise .Even though it was not your fault .Any chance they get they will Raise more cash from you .Sadly this world revolves around greed.

Used to own an 81 Kadett D, and was parked in a lane that required a specific parking disc to be in which i had. i came out of my GF's store and heard that dreadful crunching noise and turned to see a new black camry scraping down the side of my car, luckily a quick polish removed the black paint. handed over the reg no to the cops as we caught the incident on my gfs cctv cams, weeks later nothing went to the cops they told me the reg didn't exist, a few days later, a mate of my mine who is a panel beater called to say he found the car. went into the shop same car 'insurance claim owner claimed hit and run.' So i got the owners details and all became clear local town councilor had a few to many when the cops went round to see him he paid a small quiet fee for things to go away. oh well thats corrupt Africa

Dual control cars generally don't have an accelerator for the instructor My thoughts too OP, Stick the guys reg into here www.askmid.com/at least find out if he's insured! My missus got hit last week, A van driver miss understood the idea of traffic managed motorways and was driving up the closed hard shoulder, as he passed under the inside of my missus he ripped the casing off her mirror! Anyway he starts mouthing off on the slip road my missus took the reg, at this point the realise she's taken the reg and pull over, 3 blokes get out start getting lippy (Easy when it's three guys on one woman) so she calls the coppers. They carry on giving it lip until the highways pull up, on this point the get in their van and take off, not counting on there being a traffic police rangerover 30 seconds behind! Pulls em over, No MOT! Real clever stopping to argue when they had no MOT!

Hhhmm.
Your front bumper, his rear door.
How do you think the 'Authorities' will apportion blame there, then?

Report it to the police, My lad killed his clio on a greasy roundabout, clipped a kerb, spun, both bumpers off, and bent 2 wheels, did no damage to anything else, slung the plastic in the back and drove home, 3 months later he landed 6 points and £500 fine for leaving the scene, and not reporting the accident.
