I've always been under the assumption that a daylight MOT just means that you can pass the test without having any position lighting (front side/dipped/main, rear side) and still have to have indicators and brake lights. Is this the case?

I've been having the old man (mot tester) check this out & discuss this with a road traffic cop he knows we're still working on / checking the details, but afaik * you don't need indicators *you don't actually need to remove the lights! you just have to disable them, so remove the wiring / switch be interested if anyone can share actual experience of this

Actual experience here...
I rather stupidly sprayed my headlight reflector bowl black thinking it was legal but this basically resulted in not enough light being output at MOT time.
The garage kindly taped my headlights up and disconnected the plugs behind the bulbs and put on the mot certificate "Presented without headlights", obviously it's better if you do that yourself in advance but garage offered to do that rather than failed me.
I'd planned to fit new lamps that month any way (and have done since)

Forgive my ignorance on the subject, but will that MOT pass mean the car will only be "passed" for daylight use?

If it has a day light mot you can not go out in the car after dark. Lights or not. It would be classed as driving with no mot

I'm thinking more from the pre-60 exemption persective. If you can legally run without nothing but a brake light you could make all the other lighting quick release and just stick it on when needed i.e you could build a LSR style modified roadster and run round without lighting just like on the salt.

It would be classed as driving with no mot Not true - you cannot go out in the dark with no lights, but if you make them work properly you can, and don't need a new MoT to do it. The "Tested without lights" advisory is after all just an advisory! The test certificate is just as valid as any other one. Way back in the days of paper certificates, they did write "daylight use only" but not any more...

^^ wow! so, you come and get a test with your headlights disconnected / spec a daylight test - then all you test is brakelights andy? and then you can run around with just brakelights in the day - but if you go out t night you need to hook up all the other lamps??

Actually, you don't need brakelights either for a "no lights" test! Mr Amazo goes to town by scaryoldcortina, on Flickr Point is a MoT is just an inspection of the car as presented - it makes no promises about the roadworthiness of the car after it leaves the station. You could (for example) get home with a fresh test and fit some huge offset wheels with handcut slicks. Wouldn't invalidate the test, but could land you in hot water with the law.

so it'd be a case of construction and use to say what lights as a minimum you should have on the road in daylight hours?
very interesting this!

My Dads Motorbike has no lights on whatsoever. Tested on 'daylight use only' mot although afaik it is not an actual catagory, just tested as presented and advisory issued that no lighting equipment is fitted.
I believe the same applies to cars?

Had my Forester MOT ed yesterday, and I asked about this daylight MOT thingy He said doesnt apply any more, MOT is rather a grey area at times - you could get a advisory on tyres, I think its something like 3/4's of the tyre has tread it will pass with an advisory, but the law will fine you if caught running with them

Ive got the 2012 manual here in front of me and its most obvious. There must be at least 5 seperate mentions of it in their.

Took my Volvo in for test last month and the garage have all new ramps fitted with a gadget that twists the front wheels all over the place to check for wear, with all the new regs that keep coming in and the torture the poor old cars go through now I suspect lighting will be the least of any ones worries before long. :S

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.
