My 6 volt 50s Renault has a new solenoid on it -after the original died having had 12volt shoved through it manually too many times.
I've had a replacement supplied by a specialist - but it wont disengage!
Add power, and it flies in as normal -and the car turns over (and would fire if the coil wasnt disconnected!). But- short of lifting the earth off the battery- nothing I do will get it to fly out.
I've adjusted it fully in to fully out - no change; so would welcome thoughts/ suggestions as to whats going wrong.
Thanks a lot

My triumph 1300 did this once I thought it was going to explode as the engine fired up and I wasn't expecting it to happen. The cause was a badly worn out ignition switch. Replaced that and it worked fine from there on.

Thanks, but its def not that cos :-
the ignition switch is off the car
its hotwired- direct. No other connections on the battery, other than starter & wire to coil.
Thanks anyway

So is it wired such that the solenoid is permanently activated?
Try it via the ignition switch and see if it works OK that way.

No-I can connect/disconnect the solenoid. Makes no difference. Once its started turning -it wont bounce out -unless the battery earth is disconnected

very odd. I'd double check that it is wired correctly because it sounds to me like the solenoid coil is somehow being fed by the starter contacts. That's the only way I can figure out how it would start turning but not disengage until the battery is isolated.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

Yup-I was thinking something similar. There are only 2 wires connected- the main power & the lead direct to the solenoid. I'll disconnect main power -and see if it operates normally.
