As some of you may know, I have a donor Mk2 Golf GTi (Monza blue big bumper 90 spec FTW ;D) As I have now robbed it of engine and gearbox etc for my Caddy project, my thoughts turned to the remainder oif the shell. It seemed a shame just to weigh it in so I thought why not combine 2 of the greatest things in the world....Golf Gti's and BBQ's and so then this happened I have used the inner and outer wings, the front panel and bumper. I plan to make it a little higher as it's very low and I plan to wire in all the lights. I have yet to install the grill and cooking facilities. Obviously I will have to test and make sure it works so I may be BBQing in December!! I'm off to Poland to work for two weeks so you will have to wait for an update i'm afraid.

i was going to do this with the front of my bf 323 turbo... but thought it would look "amiss" only being the first few feet of teh front but i reckon that looks pretty good. i was contemplating using a boot of a beemer but just made a boring brick bbq instead... .
one thing troubles me though... is the plastic grille going to withstand the heat.?

That is one of my concerns. The grill will be towards the back. The plastic grille withstands the heat of the radiator so as long as I put some heat proofing behind it should be OK. The bonnet won't ever be closed when it's lit.

A sheet of steel (leftover roof?) about an inch away from the grille will keep it nice and cool Paint the outser side black, and the inner side white/silver... just to make sure, lol If you put the main grille into another box, with another 2-3" airgap, that will further reduce heat transfer

OK this update is long overdue. Having a rare day off and the sun was shining, I thought i had better do something productive. I moved the Caddy out into the sunshine. removed the front bumper and grill and carried the remainder into the garage. This is what I had to start with. I originally removed the the wings from the car (they bolt on), the suspension struts were already off so I chopped through the inner wings and carried the through the garage and bolted the front panel and then cut the wings and bonnet to the same size as the inner wings. My neighbour happened to be throwing away an old office desk so I releived it of the legs. I set the inner assembly up on some old Caddy wheels and cut and welded a big thick bar that I found in the skip at work, across the back to add strength. I cleaned the paint off the desk legs and welded them to the strengthening bar. I used the rest of the desk metal to make a front leg and a prop the sheet metal which the coals go on. I used some old steel I found in the garage to make the cross braces for the grill to sit on. I got my neighbour to help me manouver it through the garage and then refitted the grill and bumper and bonnet. I painted the welds and gave it all a clean and a quick valet and here is how it looks as of 5pm today. I have to find another piece of metal to brace the top of the wings to weld some hinges on for the bonnet. So far everything has been recycled (I hate that word) so I will try to find something suitable for free. I have run out of welding gas so I will pick up a bottle of that during the week. I need to come up with a new number plate too. So far I the choices are "Gti BBQ", "Rob's Gti BBQ", "Gti CarBQ". Does anyone have a better suggestion? I have also been looking at some voltage transformers on fleabay as I wt to use mains voltage to run some LED's in the headlights and indicators.

This looks great ! You can get small 12V wall transformers that will run the lights on AC just Fine. Your other best bet would probably be a laptop power supply as they can provide a decent amount of amps. Or an atx computer power supply.

i would suggest you don't want full beam headlights glring at you as you sit eating your bbq food why not butcher a cheap battery head torch or two and stick an led in each light will be enough to make them glow without making them into flood lights and no mains required
