Please help! What with the cold weather approaching i need to get this sorted! Basically my wifes Mazda 323 1.3 spits out a bit of water from the overflow when the engine is turned off. Therefore it needs topping up every time its driven. Need to get some antifreeze in there but due to the amount it dumps out we cant warrant it until its sorted. Thermostat has been tested and apparently is fine. Changed rad cap. Doesn't overheat or lose or use water when driven, but after a drive and when the engine is switched off it comes out of the overflow.
Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

My old 1983 323 did the same the thing, the gasket had gone in-between a waterway and one of the cylinders. Pretty easy gasket change though nice and easy to work on these little 323s

Agreed probably head gasket...do a comp test or a sniff test. By sounds of it exhaust gasses are pressurising the coolant.

One way to check is to squeeze the coolant pipes running to the radiator before starting the engine - they will be soft. Then start the engine and feel the pipes. If they harden up quickly, and before they get hot, then it's the HG gone.

Just try and bleed it first, my girlfriends mx5 was doing something similar and I ran the engine with the rad cap off, every time it spurted out a fountain of coolant I poured more in until it stopped doing it - the old Mazda motors are brilliant but a little bit tricky to bleed! The symptoms where coolant curse word out of the overflow, bubbling behind the dash when it was turned off and ultimately overheating, sorted now though. Although it was due to a cowboy garage - it needed an oil seal and I was too busy at the time, put it into a garage to do and asked them to flush the coolant and fill with anti freeze - came back with a massive air lock and the above problems!

kwick fit and northway tyres have a presurised machine that removes old fluids and puts in new iliminating air locks , excellent bit of kit,
but as said get it sniffed as it sounds like its gone between cylinder and water way and having no antifreeze will only cause the waterway to rot out,.
