I love Sierra's. I love them a lot.I have had many, the last one being a GT, that I sold about a week ago, to Robinxr4i. Reason being I had been made redundant, again, and it had to go. I now have new work, and so with it, a new Sierra. I had spotted this one a good few years ago, and it was on on my 'abandoned cars' list. I did try to buy it then, it wasnt for sale. Fast forward to now, and I get tipped off about a Sierra for sale, scrap money, which might have the same engine as my Estate(imploded en route to Telford one day). When I was told where it was, I knew it was the same. I went to go look at it, knowing I would buy it anyway.I have a good feeling. Anyway, I give you, my new Sierra! ;D Note the amount of leaves! Its a bit battered in places Mainly both wings, the odd door or two! On the move after two and a half years Coming back down And parked, awaiting the recovery truck! I really like that pic, not sure why. Anyway, the plan.Well, I'm afraid my estate may have to wait a little longer for an engine! It may be battered, but its totally solid!Couldnt believe it. Rear door shuts, perfect. Sills, all perfect.Battery tray, perfect. Its amazing! There's no way I can break this thing up. Yes its a bit rough, yes the inside looks like a landfill, and home to much wildlife, but its a survivor, having escaped certain death twice now, as this owner, and the last wanted it for bits, but never got to it. And, it has a full set of uprated springs, and a phat exhaust! More updates to follow after the weekend.

Look forward to seeing how this progresses. Something about this makes me really like it despite the dents etc. So much potential.

It's great to see one of those old rep-mobiles being saved from a near certain death...! I still hanker after another Sierra having had one (2.0i GLX estate) many moons ago, I like the look of the later model XR4x4's... Anyhow, this car looks superb and I am sure just a days worth of solid elbow grease will get it looking a million times better...!

Yet again RR totally fails to disappoint. What most people would consider more than ready to be thrown away, an RR'er digs out, tows away and gets back on the road (I know, I'm getting ahead of the thread a bit). Nice work!

Cheers all.Never let it be said I'm not a trier! Had a poke around today.Put a battery on it, just to see if it'll turn over.Turned the key, and all I get is a 'click'. Tried a few times, and no more than that.Thought the engine might be seized, so went to have a look, and saw a fair amount of smoke coming from the live battery lead, at the starter motor. The lead was obviously very hot.Any ideas why?Is it, do you think, that I'd been trying the starter quite a bit, and it wasn't turning, that somehow thats overloaded the wiring, causing heat?Or something else? Disconected the battery, just in case, and turned the engine on a ratchet on the bottom pulley, and it turned. So thinking the starter is stuck. Might try and take it off to see if I can un-stick it.

As others have already said great save with the Sierra. Especially as it had been left for dead and was ment to be broken up for parts. Always liked Sierras though I've never owned one myself but my Grandad had a G reg one new as a company car complete with brick in car telephone! Went 3 times round the clock in it and had 2 replacement gearboxes I seam to recall him saying. Sounds to me like it's the starter motor thats at fault. You could try the old trick of getting a piece of wood and a hammer an giving the casing of the starter motor a tap a few times see if that frees it off? Should then hopefully get it started. Or you could try bump starting it as well if you have the space etc. But the starter motor will want replacing though I should think. Good luck with it and I'll be looking forward to seeing more progress.

The resistance of the starting circuit is really high which is what is making the wires smoke. Trying it for a while will make it really hot yeah.
It's clicking so relays are engaging - means you're likely to have electrons whizzing around and judging by the smoke, the right amount as well. Like the poster above I agree it's probably a starter issue.

Great save, hopefully it can be resurrected, it looks like it could be a really nice car. As for the starter, stick it in gear, and rock it backwards and forwards. Might work Of course, you probably already tried that if you're a Ford man

Cheers all. Ive tried all the normal things, but to no avail.Had another poke around today, and think its properly stuck.Even to the point that when I connected the battery again, I got big sparks, like it was still drawing power.Gave it a whack, re connected battery, no sparks, then a click on the key, smoke, again.Just found another starter in a breakers not too far away, so shall go grab that tommorow or sat if I can. Meanwhile, I attacked the inside. Before; An an hour with the hoover later, Its not perfect, but at least I can sit in it now without being acosted by a critter!Still needs a bit more, but Ill wait till I take the seats out for that.Need a bug bomb too, just in case. Otherwise, I found out that the central locking works, so does both electric windows, and the horn, and the stereo and tape player. The heater fans work too, but wont completely turn off, even when set to zero.Indicators don't, but I'm hoping thats becase the wiper/lights on/off stalk is missing, so not making the circuit(or something). And this is the curse word that came out of it, including what appears to be a TV stand? ???Will investigate later. And lastly, a quick showoff of my beautifully none rusty rear arches! ;D Cant believe it consider its life for the last four years!

Small updates, but great news! Yesterday, I went and had another play, and decided to remove the starter, as that seemed to be the issue. And the result was, completely seized solid.I found a breakers yard with another starter, and a quick round trip(well about two hours actually) later, and I have another one, as seen below; Old New With the new one fitted, I gave the key a turn, just to make sure all was good. And then it started to get a bit weird. On the key, it started to fire!It tried to start. But with no plug leads attached! This freaked me out a bit, and went to have a look, and realised that there was one lead still in the distributor. plugged the rest in, and turned the key, and on the key, it bloody started!Just like that.two and a half years of not being started, and it just went.I wasnt even in the car, just stood next to it.I wasn't expecting that, so hadn't put any fuel in it, so was running on years old fuel, and well too.Sounds pretty good! ;D ;D I am happy with this. So anyway, that was yesterday. Today, I put some fresh fuel in, started it again, and prepared for its maiden voyage around the yard.Only to find, that the clutch is stuck.Wont go into gear when running, but engine off, into gear, and it jumps forward even with the pedal in, so think thats the case.Need to figure out how to un-stick. Had another go on the inside instead, Seats out;Messy Major hoover session later I also raided my box of bits, and found a couple of wiper/headlamp stalks, as they're missing from my car.Plugged them in, and that gave me working wiper motors, and lights! They all work, apart from indicators(not sure why yet). Also, a bit weird is putting the wipers on, when the lights are on, and it turns the lights off.Not totally sure the stalks are the right ones, as there is a spade connector that doesn't go anywhere.Might be a reason for the oddities?Hopefully ill figure it out.Cheers for reading!

Yay, Sierra love and rescue all in one thread...after a day of issues with my little shed (Sierra) it's nice to read a positive story, makes me feel its all worth while thank you! With regard to the light/wiper issue, mine has always dropped down to side lights when I use the rear wiper, I haven't got a clue what causes it I'm guessing a power drain somewhere. It's never come up at mot time though. Good luck with it I've book marked this for future inspiration when rust gets me down

I'm glad you're saving this Sierra, it takes a certain amount of courage! I've long liked them, possibly because it is one of the first major cars I remember coming out. They were quite bold, at least in styling terms and their look has lasted. I think they'll be quite a classic eventually.
