I never noticed that was on a Q - did it go through an BIVA test? pretty sure Q plates have been around a lot longer than BIVA, in fact I think there was an SVA test before the BIVA, there might have even been something before SVA? First car to fail an SVA was a lambo countach if I recall correctly. To make it pass you had to fit the aniversary kit

That's a recent build though is it not? Thought it was the one that was built out of a LWB shell?
Yeah SVA has been around for 30 years.

SVA is a mid '90s thing, is is not?? Q plates have been around a lot longer. I'm not sure where I learned of it, or if it's true, but it was claimed it first started for British servicemen who had cars at foreign posting who wanted to bring them back when they returned to Blighty. I could be talking cobblers though.
But Q has been applied to to all sorts of "indeterminate age or origin" : kitcars, radically modified cars, rebuilt insurance write-offs, milk-floats, mini-roadsweepers, quads, electric invalid buggies.....

The Quattro is a shortened monococque construction which puts it well into BIVA and Q plate territory.

Q plates have been around a lot longer. IIRC the Q plate came out when the prefixes changed in '83, when the letter was moved to the front of the reg no. That Quattro is a real poster boy for the Q plate; appropriate letter for the car... ;D

The Quattro is a shortened monococque construction which puts it well into BIVA and Q plate territory. That was a Q plate before the shell was cut up... Didn't know that..... but it doesn't change anything and is probably why the guy used that particular car for the build. Any modifications to a monococque that may compromise the structural integrity automatically render the build to BIVA inspection and Q plate status, if and when it gets passed as roadworthy. We can only assume that it originally got the Q plate because the owner was unable to proof the history of the car when applying for registration. A separate prefix letter to distinguish cars of dodgy origin from those that are rebuilt has to be the way forward to remove the stigma and make people proud of receiving 'Q' status.

So its not a "legal" Q plate then. Oh well have to find another poster car. Whether the guy chose to have it inspected or not was his decision but that is really what I and other previous posters are saying. A dedicated classification for modified vehicles is needed. Personally, I treat cars same as people. Take 'em as I find 'em.
