Some of you may have seen my E30 thread, this is its replacement as it was just too rotten and not worthwhile. This is the new project, an Audi S2. For those who don't know, an S2 is an Audi 80 quattro fitted with a 20v Turbo inline 5 cylinder engine. This is one of the last cars and is fitted with the ABY 230bhp engine and 6 speed gearbox. Not many around now thanks to specialist breakers, as the cars are worth good money in bits. There were 320 s2 avants supplied to the UK, and there are only 99 now registerd. This car has been standing since 2008 in a gararge, the previous owner had it for over 10 yrs. He did a lot of work on it and its in good order. It stopped running in 2009 and it was left in a lockup. I only had a dolly to tow it home, so had to drop off the prop and remove the front bumper. The car is full of spares, some are brand new, and I got a lot of paperwork and history with it. More pics later, not had a chance to even look at it yet. There is lots to do, but when its re commisioned and tidy I want to make it faster (one of the most tunable engines ever made) and give it the RS2 look-

Its so difficult to get pics this time of year! I get home around 6;30 and its dark. I had a look through the parts I got with the car, used turbo, spare carbon inserts, new arch liners, new roll bar links, new bushes, complete air con set up with new pipes, both cats, covers, lots of other bits like badges and plastics still in the packet. I expect the spares come to almost what I paid for the car. The car is already fitted with EBC greens, drilled/grooved disks, braided brake lines, powder coated subframe, new springs,de cat exhaust system, new clutch,ect ect. To put it in simple terms, I paid four figures for a car with no tax, no MOT and does not run, but boy I'm happy with it. I have had a go at starting it, The previous owner was told it has a failed crank sensor but he fitted 2 new ones and it didnt start, I have removed the imobiliser (cant get serious until weekend) but I'm wondering if the flywheel pickup was damaged when the clutch was replaced. Bit worried about the ding in the cooler, hope it doesnt leak..

Are these different from S4 engines?
Have you got any more info, havent really looked into the S2 engines before mate.

as in UR S4/6 (C6), they are very similar, if you mean B5, then totally different. C6 S4: B5 S4
|

Was dissapointed with the rotten e30, as I am partial to these motors..... however, this looks like it will turn out good, watching with enthusiasm.
PS.... when you say tunable, bolt on stuff or do you need to upgrade internals as well? I almost splashed out on a 80 v6 quattro, but did not seem like much scope to increase power without spending a fortune.

Hopefully Gav won't mind me replying here, the engine in these is basically the same as the 20v UR lump, so anything that works on one of them will work on the S2 lump and the C6 S4/S6 lump too, mounts are the same on all of the 5 cyls anyway, hence you can build something like this...

Holy smokes.............. that is awesome man, can only dream of an e30 powersliding like that. Sounded like a lot of turbo lag, again is this just a big turbo and intercooler bolted on or is there more to what meets the eye? Dunno how the drive train on that held it together!!

Tuning.... Thanks James, like james said its a different set up to the v6, the 20v i5 is a legend. This is essentialy the same lump as the groupe B rlly quattro S1s.
With stages its - a chip= 280-290 hp (de cat helps) RS2 turbo, injectors,cooler, ex manifold 380, after this you need rods and there are a lot of cars between 500 and 700 hp, the most i have seen on a road going car is 1200hp. Search youtube - audi 80 audi s2 ect - prepare to be gobsmacked.
Got it running today, new fuel pump and hall sensor and away. sounds like a bag of nails tho, be a while until the lifters go quiet.

Mine has De-cat exhaust, and soon chip and K26/6 turbo (spare from 944) will be around 310 I think.
BTW, the RS2 was 311 and was reported to be faster to 30mph thn a mclaren F1!

Sweet looking car dude. I passed you the other morning near the Lidlington turn on my way to work. Your other Avant looks spot on so I guess this will get the same treatment. I would love one of these but they're way out of my range at the mo............

BTW, the RS2 was 311 and was reported to be faster to 30mph thn a mclaren F1! That onboard clip is epic, getting some good angle on the drift. I now remember why I was looking at the v6 80...... price!! lol. Are all the Audi 80`s based on quattro chassis? ie, could you transplant engine and running gear from an accident damaged s2 to an estate like your diesel irem? Or this unique to the quattro model only?

B4 avants and saloons can be converted, not coupes - lot of work though. This must be a conversion, it has 4 stud among other things Let me know if and when you want one, I have another (yeh, I know )...and its b2 quattro. I needed a new fuel pump as the old on was dead, Then I had to get it to clip in there, looks easier than it was..

I thought the RS2's were rapid on pull off, so the S2 and RS2 basically use the same engine except the S2 was a de-tuned version?

Those must be beefed up drive trains, some heavy launching going down . Just parted with 3k on a family holiday, still licking my wounds...... will bear you in mind once I`ve recovered.
What was behind this one being parked up for that long?

Good cars and they last well. My 240k+ one at christmas ran with no issue's and did over 167mph on a runway on dedicated equipment.
The turbo mentioned above would probably not be worthwhile, too much lag/not much increase in performance. A k26/27 hybrid is a good upgrade or just a rs2 turbo is good for nearly 400bhp.
rs2 manifold gt3071r remap 440cc injectors 3 inch system
will get around 430bhp on a stock bottom end.

Bent valves... new valves.. Not sure how it can do only one in each pair, what i do know is that the belt was on wrong. Hence a cam sensor fault code, i wish i had fitted the sensor before starting it as i would have seen it was timed up wrong.. Had quite enough of this already!

Apart- Together- Coolant bleed/ test run FFS, is that a missfire? Il run it up the street and see if it clears, A little while later.... it didnt clear - lost temper Which made it clear and run perfectly. ;D Now for big clean/ tidy/ new wheels ect..
