they're TOTALLY fine on pre '72 cars - I.e ones that SHOULD have them....or CAN have them. They suck monkey goats anal balls on a mk3 golf with 17's on it though.....for example.. its your motor matey, do what you like - HOWEVER, the rozzers might not see it that way.

legally no,but you knew that anyway.personally i would risk it,i cant see the porkies paying much attention to it.like thrasher said if it was a recognisably modern motor then you may have probs, with an old car i don't think they'll even give you a second look.as a suggestion i would think about keeping the yellow/white plates in the boot ,at least then when pulled you could say " oops ossifer ,i've been to a show and forgot to swap them back,i'll do it now, silly me" or words to that effect.

That was my thinking - my car is 2 years too young but I thought what the hell, I like 'em and it doesn't look out of place at all, since my car has been around since 1968. If it was a Ford Focus or summat, that would be daft, but on something that could feasibly have the B/W plates it's fine. Talking of fines... I'm prepared to get one from an on-the-ball police officer, I'm prepared to take that risk.

IMO i would go black n silver jan 73 is the cut off point offically but ive seen loads of later 74/5 motors using them theres also variations to size and font also,[ftp]http://www.northumbrianumbers.com/Content.aspx?p=1[/ftp] link to number plate law page oh when my pop went for its mot the inspector complained about its reflective white/yellow plates, said it should have black and silver ones, they have arrived today

I reckon the reflective ones look better on a Dolomite. The cars too modern to look right on 50s/60s style black plates.

Whilst I really like Black/Silver plates its been a bit over done IMHO thats why I got some proper white/yellow refelctive made up be different Get these, they are the path to truth. My dad made an interesting point about this - if people could have yellow and white plates, they generally did, even before they were mandatory. Everyone likes to look "futuristic." I'm not too keen on black and silver plates on stuff like post '68 bugs for example. Just my 3.14159 26535 89793 23846 26433 83279 50288 41971 69399 37510 centimes like

Go for the black and white if you want, just don't moan when you get a fine/something similar. As everyone has said it is illegal, but I'm waiting for mine to come through the post ;D

Has anyone ever been tugged for black'n'silvers? On something appropriate I mean?
I had black and silver plates on my old Land Rover... that was an R-suffix, but was technically eligable for them as it was built in 1968... never had anyone question them....

get some black plates stuck on, but i would carry your yellow and white plates around with you, cos if u get pull and the officer sees em in your boot then he'l know that u know u were braking the law. id leave em at home and claim that u had no idea

I think with a more period vehicle you're likely to slip by due to general disinterest - but I've seen lots of moderns pulled around where we are for B&S plates! I don't think Dollies suit black plates IHMO, so few of them were ever fitted with them anyway. Even my '71 had yella and white ones (it's original 3D plates).
