Hello Everyone!
In April 2013 myself and a friend will be raising money for the Royal National Lifeboat Institute, by undertaking an epic challenge.
We will be visiting every RNLI station and Boat House on the mainland of our fair country, that's over 230 places. We will cover over 6,000 miles and encounter every type of terrain GB has to offer. Due to the nature of where these stations are located, we will hardly ever be using main roads, mainly travelling on 'B' roads or lower.
And how will we be travelling, well in a classic Mini of course, painted in RNLI colours, the perfect transport for two 6 foot plus fully grown men for such a journey! ;D
Due to the nature of the trip, we will maximising our impact by undertaking challenges, other sponsored events and encouraging the crews on route to help us raise as much as possible.
We will be starting and finishing at the University of East Anglia, where it is hoped to have an event each time to celebrate the journey and showcase the RNLI.
Of course, with such an undertaking, in a retro car, it'd be fantastic to get as many people here involved as possible! I'm thinking of such things as:
*Meet and Greet gatherings on the route *Meetups at your local RNLI station *Retro convoys for small sections of the route
Everything we do we'd like to get in the media for as much publicity as possible, every little helps when it comes to these things!
What do you all think? I'll be sure to keep the thread updated as we source a vehicle and prep it etc, we well as general updates if you're interested!
The next 5 months for us will be very busy indeed as we set about organising this adventure!
Ian

Thank for the support guys and the terrible puns! ;D Myself and Geordie tried out a Mini for size today and amazingly we both fitted better then expected, with a little fettling on the seats, we'll be just fine. There's more room then I thought. Interestingly Geordie had a Mini-van when a young Squaddie in the early 70s and the Mini collector we were talking to mentioned how expensive they can be to buy now! Anyway, we're definitely going for a Mini, so we're now on the lookout for a suitable vehicle. So, is there the potential for some meet-ups on our route with any of the members here? Would be fantastic if we could meet as many of you as possible, though because we'll mainly be sticking to the coast, it may limit some of you! Ian

The planning is well underway. We have been to see several Minis, but nothing has been right so far. We have got a local garage that does excellent body repairs and paintwork agreed to paint the Mini in RNLI colours when we acquire one!
As we set up 'Tac HQ' and plan the route, itinerary and time-scale, I'll publish a list of dates and times and where we will be... Hopefully then we'll get some meet-ups, convoys and gatherings organised.
Will get some photos up once we have some good material too!

We are still ploughing ahead with the planning and hope to publish our provisional route schedule in the next few weeks.... We also aim to have the car by the end of the month. That will give us enough time to do the needed work on it, as our budget is everything with buying the Mini! Stay tuned and we'll get some meet ups sorted out, it's going to be great to meet some of you and your cars on the way!! Ian

Good luck guys. A terrific cause and mammouth journey. I wonder if either of the main petrol retailers would give you a fuel card for the trip?

Sounds like a great thing to do. I spent the early part of my life on and around boats a lot and my Mum's Scillonian, so I definitely support the cause!
I'd be interested to meet you guys at Lyme Regis when you're down here, and if it's not too anti-social timing I'm sure I could get the regular guys from the local Retro Rides meet to come along too, maybe a few from the Mini clubs too although I haven't attended them for a while.
Good luck with it all, let us know when there's somewhere we can donate/follow your progress so we know when you'll be around.

Thanks everyone! We've been busy these last few weeks with it all. Geordie has finished the provisional schedule but a stinking cold has prevented me from getting it and posting it up here. Will do so soon then we can start getting the meets organised! ;D I do know that we'll be leaving the UEA on the afternoon of Thursday 18th of April (my Birthday!!) First stop is at Happisburgh Lifeboat Station in Norfolk then we work our way clockwise around the country, Suffolk and Essex on the 18th and 19th then into London for the stations there and a meet up with the RNLI Admin staff in central London. On the 21st I'm running in the Marathon (our first 'rest' day ) before we head out again on the 22nd towards Kent! Jobs this week include setting up our facebook and twitter pages and the mammouth job of speaking to all the different lifeboat crews at every station! We also need to get the car this month to allow time for repair work and preparation, please see the 'wanted' section of the forum for my post there as we've not had a great deal of luck so far. Thanks again for all the support, stay tuned as things will start to move quickly now Ian

Thank you We're in the process of getting that set up, making sure it goes directly to the RNLI. We're just waiting on our unique reference number to be confirmed. I'll also be scanning a copy of the letter that officially endorses us from the RNLI and putting it up here before posting the link. So myself and Geordie are off tomorrow to collect the Mini we've bought, early start to get the trailer and probably about 200 miles in total to do from start to finish. I'll start taking pictures! Please do like the page on facebook and follow us on Twitter. There's lots more to come! ;D Ian
