as above, what are the differences between the NA and turbo'd 1.6D's (can you swap over the manifolds and fuel pump or is there a lower comp ect)
And is the 4sp diesel gearbox any good on the motorway or is it under geared?
Cheers
Craig

compression is the same, td just has oil squirter's under pistons to keep them cool, everything swaps over fine, not having the squirters is nothing to worry about imo.
4sp diesel boxes are horerndous at 60mph

The 1.6d will have no power, the 1.6td will have slightly more ;D
I was told a long time ago, that the block on the TD's were strengthened and that turboing a Na block results in higher forces than the Na can handle reliably!

Craig, if you want any bits off the 1.6td that's in my Scirocco then let me know, it'll hopefully be getting pulled out in the next few weeks. Block and head are buggered, but the rest seems to be ok, so there's a modified pump and a decent turbo/manifolds there if you wanted them? Same goes for the squirt-jets and stuff if they're any use?

They did 3 diesel models for the mk1 in europe:
1.5L 50 PS (37 kW; 49 hp) I4 1.6L 54 PS (40 kW; 53 hp) I4 1.6L 70 PS (51 kW; 69 hp) I4 TD

I was (am possibly if the audi sells in time) looking at a mk1 cab thats had a 1.6D dropped in and wondering how easy it would be to add a bit more go without pulling the lump (and the scirocco's engine remains formed part of this thought process Robin ). But its got a 4spd box and it sounds like that isn't going to be much cop for my daily commute (and haven't really the budget to turbo it, let alone trying to source a 5spd diesel box). But useful to know and will store away for future use

The 'rocco's also got a 5 speed 02o diesel box on it by the way it was perfect in the Scirocco, just on the edge of boost at 80 in 5th. It won't be needed with the new engine as the 02o won't be man enough, so if you want it let me know, you'd be welcome to the stainless TSR shift links on it too, as well as the arm that's been re-drilled to make a short shift. In fact you'd be welcome to basically everything in the engine bay other than the intercooler.

I was told a long time ago, that the block on the TD's were strengthened and that turboing a Na block results in higher forces than the Na can handle reliably! well in this case you were told wrong, the blocks and heads are the same the compression ratio is the same, you can even add the squirters to it if you wanted the holes are there and just need taping. same goes for most of the old na and tds i have messed with too.

I bow down to your better knowledge, the only VW engine I have in the fleet is a 1.6TD in a T25
