I'll happily tackle most things on a car but I hate working on drum brakes!
However the rear brakes on my Fiat Panda (new shape not retro, sorry but applicable to all drum brakes) need renewing (shoes, drums etc). Anybody got some good tips about working on drum brakes, mainly on fighting with springs etc.

Keep everything in order - once the drum is off take a couple of photos so it all goes back in the right way round.
Don't put the handbrake on ....... !
Put the new parts on a sheet of cardboard in the same orientation that they will be when on the car.
Get (or make) the spring 'puller' - essentially a screwdriver with a hook at the end for winning the fight with the springs.
Check you haven't put the handbrake on ....... !
Get the inside of the drum as clean as possible
Clean and work the piston in and out by hand to make sure it's as free as poss.
Make sure you know which way the adjuster needs to be wound to give the new shoes clearance
Don't be too soft on re-assembly - the drum will seem quite tight initially even if you've got the step above right.
Use a dab of copper grease on the drum retaining screw (if you have one) on re-assembly.

The <insert not nice word> handbrake cable is broken.
On the other hand the self adjuster looks OK, oh and the real problem was the brake lining had detached...

I pull both drums off do one and use the other side for referance. Drum brakes aren't all that bad as there is only 2 shoes to worry about if you hate drum brakes I challenge you to change all the shoes on centrifugal drum clutch. Just a tad more complicate p.s the springs all have to go back in the right place. I recently had the displeasure of having to repair one of these where somebody had put the R clips in from the outside. Its spinning so centrifugal force pushed the retaining clips out and mullured the drum and shoes.
