I've just had a guy interested in buying one of my cars, Tipo 2.0, and he reckons all 'older' cars should have matching numbers on the windows.
i told him i have never heard of this (in 28 years) but he's sure. in his opinion maybe the front won't match as it may have been replaced at some point but if the others don't then the car has possibly been in a big accident at some point!?!? WTF?
I told him i'd have a look but don't think they'll be there. Sure enough, on my Rover, the door windows have a matching serial number, but the rear quarter lights have their own and the rear and front have different again.
has anyone heard of this ever being the case or is he, like i think, just plain wrong?

more likely to be a part number than a serial number i would have thought.

Yep......tosh and codswallop!!! People like him should appreciate that sh*t happens...windows get broken, accidentally or otherwise, and it's cheaper to get one from a scrapper than order it from a Fiat dealer (and anyone who's ever ordered anything from a Fiat dealer in particular will know how frustrating THAT can be......).
Sounds like he's trying to find a bargaining tool to knock the price down with....tell him to curse word off to Yes Car Credit or something :-)

It was certainly recommended in the 1980s to have the number plate etched into the windows as an anti-theft measure but it was never compulsory so he is talking out of his behind. My 2CV has it although the original windows glasses are in the dining room at the moment. This tagging is useful as otherwise, they would just be another pair of windows!

if its a serial number then theres no way theyd match, imagine trying to find a front drivers window in a parts store when all the serial numbers are the same. hes either mixed up with reg numbers etched in or hes just full of runny custard

If he`s talking about reg numbers etched into the glass, I can tell you my Capri is a Y-reg according to the tailgate, an A-reg according to the passenger window and nothing on the drivers side glass. And its a very straight car.
He`s swallowed a copy of which or parkers or some other slacks-wearing prat`s guide by the sound of it, which will contain phrases like "If all the numbers on the glass don't match, then walk away" not realising that the person would be walking away from every old car in Britain.
I think you might be better off finding a buyer with a more realistic approach, even if he has got a point he`s already marked himself out as a bit of a pedant. I get these kind of questions all the time from people looking at £3500 Vectras, and thats fair enough, but you don't need this kind of curse word when youre trying to sell your old Tipo.

My Fabia (from new) was linked to a data base that has a record of of everyones car, mileage and adress, so that if your car got striped they could trace it back. But instead of using the numberplates to I.D. the cars, they use their own serial numbers so that they can charge a fee to new owners to stay on record. Neadless to say, I spend the £35 on something more usefull!

most of my skodas seem to have at lest a plate or some kind of number etched in but tbh any real car enthusiast or even just buyer doesnt look for something so picky and pedandent. it might be an idea to check the doors for any kind of trace numbers to show theyve never been replaced, i mean windows get smashed all the time! (which on a bye note - my dad had our loan-car mondeo whilst the felicia was being repaired after an accident, had it 3 days and a truck reversed into the side windows lolol)

I was a maintenance engineer at a company that moulded plastic trim to car windows and numbers on glass can mean anything from part numbers to tint level, aftersales parts, even the country the car is destined for.But at the end of the day if your buying a car as old as a tipo your only concern should be if it starts, stops and goes

Just had another conversation with him. LOL, he's pretty convinced they are there. So i just told him, 'ok the car's in Yorkshire, i'm in Watford, i can't check and it doesn't matter anyway' and he shut up and carried on arranging pickup i'll have a look when i get back to the car but who knows. he sounds perhaps middle eastern and is living in Ireland so i'd be interested in where he gets his references from

My 1965 Beetle is C reg, the drivers door window is M reg and the passenger door window is a different C reg to the numberplates The M reg beetle is still on the road, the other C reg beetle has been turned into a buggy. Each door has a different 20 year old alarm system sticker too.

i work for for a windscreen company who still etches your reg no along with our logo and freephone no on it, none of my cars has had this treatment, we have people who want it done even when they`ve put a private plate onto the car, you can blank out old reg no`s with acid etching gel, just like a frosty window on your glass, good way of hiding but blows the whole security thing into question. some manufacturers put part of the chassis no onto the glass for security reasons, we can never identify modern cars from info on the glass just the chassis no and sometimes that can still be wrong. the only matching no`s i can think of is the country of origin mark which is a circle with E1 or similar in it, not all glass is made by the same companies so if a screen or doorglass is replaced thats your no`s gone, wish this bloke had come round mine banging on about matching no`s,

As a completely useless bit of info that is related in a way, the old Triplex glass oft fitted to English cars can be dated month/year by looking for dots placed around the Triplex logo. I can't remember what the code is though
