corsa's alternator ahas decided to kindly make really bad noises and battery light flashes!
so if i get an alternator from a breaker how do i go about checking it over before handing over the dosh? and anything to clean it down with that is suitable for an alternator? cheers

The best you can really do at a breakers is just spin the thing by hand and make sure the bearings aren't grumbly. Anything from a breakers yard should be guaranteed anyway. As for cleaning it, just wipe it down with degreaser or whatever, try not to soak it through if you can avoid it but they don't generally mind water too much. Make sure it's dried off before using it.

cheers pal, mine is definately on its way out on the motorway made a grumbling noise and battery light flashed on and of going to be changing the alternator and belt and charging the battery overnight should do the trick for cold morning starts .. i hope!

I'm a bit lucky as we have a very local workshop that will test and refurbed alternators cheap as you like . Maybe you have one close to you in London ? Must be some ? .. this place cleans strips paints and rebuilds with new bushes brushes and diode packs for 25 - 45 notes .. depending on the car ..
