I'd been on the lookout for a first (small) bike to turn into a little bobber but couldn't find a suitable donor in my price range. then I stumbled across this! and this Well, thats it, the seed was planted Cafe racer style it was then! ebay was browsed and, just as I was giving up hope I found a complete non runner/ spares or repairs gp100 in the parts section! I chucked in a bid and scored this tatty and stood since 2010, fresh fuel a few kicks and vroooooom ning ning ning. It runs! and pretty smooth too! I was feeling full of win! then I cleaned it up a bit and removed some surface rust, the chrome has pretty much had it but the rest is solid. chucked on a new filter little cone type. then this happened! and so thats how it currently stands - so far £239 invested including the bike itself! next up , a cafe seat (diy or bought, not sure yet) and some ace bars and we're nearly there! a refreshing change from working around a car! ;D well pleased with it so far! anyone know a good method for removing light dents from a tank?

Empty the tank and lightly pressurise it with compressed air (and I mean lightly) warm the dint with a hot air gun - or if its really dinted you'll need the welding torch on it to get it warm enough to come out + you need to get ALL the petrol and vapour out of the tank.

old and 2 stroke. ticks both my boxes then ;D projects like this are what remind me I really need to get on and finish my little kh100. not much left to do but something always seems to get in the way (mostly my damn mopeds going wrong haha) was going to cafe racer it as well but think I like it as it is so staying as it is. gp's though cry out for the cafe racer mods. something looks so right about them.

Sort out the jetting with the K&N otherwise it will run way too lean and sieze at the first inconvient moment, try going up about 50 to 100 sizes on the main jet as a starting point.

cheers dodgerover, after some reading ( I hadn't realised how sensitive bikes were to air filters) I think I'll be going back to the standard airbox. I wasn't too sure on the big gap in the frame it had left by removing it either , I think I prefered it in there.

been having a bit of a play around this evening. first attempt looking to long in the seat area. was trying to cover the frame to avoid chopping it . second attempt looking a bit better with a couple o' inches out of the seating area . need to have a bit of a rethink , but It will still in my opinion look better the the chunky old original seat. back to the drawing board opinions people?

I'd chop a bit off the back if it was mine.

I think Thats probably what I'll end up doing. I'm not sure about the legal side of cutting the frame about though. Don't want to cause myself any future issues. I could always fit the seat hump where I want it and leave frame poking out, but that would probably look daft - will trawl google images to see how others have done it.

You know i've never thought twice about the legalities of it before taking an angle grinder and welder to a frame, obviously lopping off the rear loop isn't going to have any effect on the handling although tieing the two cut ends back together at the new end point would probably be a good idea. Maybe ask on the other retro bike forum?

I guess it'd be fine. I'll just be taking a section out to shorten the rear. was just unsure if it counted like car chassis mods. I'll join a couple of biker forums. Britchopper should know.

The GN tail section of frame wasn't linked, I can see that yours is so as Dodge says, re-connect the two pieces after the chop. ;D

Yeah, I'd intended to cut out a section and reuse the end so as to keep the indicator mounts etc. It doesn't taper in until right at the end so should be an easy rejoin. If I can find a metal rod that'll slip inside the frame it'll make re-alignment easy too.

ah well, have ordered a seat, and am currently winning the bidding on some ace bars on ebay .
the seat will force me into a frame vhop, but I think as above shows it was definately needed. will update in a few days when bits arrive!!!

My seat unit has arrived and been test fitted...........................a bit short for my liking however it shows promise, and I like the rear view I think it only needs an extra 2" to 3" to make it look like this (quick photoshop) the seat cover material is quite stretchy , and with a bit of heating from the girlfriends hairdryer , a staple gun and some high desity foam I should be able to come up with the extra length without recovering the seat. once I've fitted it I'll know how much to lop of the rear of the frame. I've also had fun with the Mikuni carb flooding, the float was set wrong as far as i could tell, it *seems* to be ok now I've had it to bits and tweaked it. My Ace Bars have been dispatched , so they will be next on the list. I'm hoping it'll be a fairly cool looking little bike by time I'm finished. total cost so far is still less than £300, If I can get it finished for less than £400 I'll be happy

Possibly the float just sticking, had this with the GN. Drop the float bowl & make sure inside is nice and clean & check the float needle. They do wear over time & might need changing. The seat unit looks pretty smart, imo it's great the way it is without making it bigger but that would be my choice (your ride & all that ) Interested to se what colour you go for, dunno why but I reckon bare metal would look pretty sweet (coated with clear for protection of course).

Cheers, That seat unit is from a skyteam ace, I picked it up for less than £40 brand new. The problem with bare metal is , it's only the tank that is metal, the sides and the seat unit are plastic. I might go silver, the same as the seat unit though as I like the first bike in this thread. I intend to have some sort of old skool tattoo style numbers , 66 , 13 , or 7 again undecided on either the side panels or the tank.
I've extended the seat unit in those pics above with the bars on, I think that sits about right now . . . . it's an extra 2" . I just need to finish it as the front is a bit too rounded . need some fairly solid foam. at the moment it's been tested with some balled up socks, ha ha
Total cost £287
