Hi all, I keep replacing the rear hub seals on my car (1982 Mitsubishi Sigma) And every time I take it to get a WOF (M.O.T) they've started leaking again and ruined the brake shoes,. I've fixed them twice myself, and the third time took it to a workshop, who went so far as to put sealant around the backing plate etc, and it's still leaked Any pointers towards what could be causing this would be greatly appreciated since I really have no idea what else to do. Cheers.

Is it a live axle? Check the breather isn't blocked!

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

What type of seal is it? A gasket seal or a lip seal?

Is it a live axle? Check the breather isn't blocked! It's live axle, the breather has already been cleaned out. I think it'd be a lip seal (Fits in the axle itself, infront of the bearing)

It hasn't been massively overfilled with oil has it? The only other thing that I can think of is that the bearings have collapsed and its letted the shaft moved causing the leaks. But am assuming that this would have been picked up when you had new seals fitted? Likewise if the area the seal ran on was damaged?

Is the sealing surface on the halfshaft worn? If there's a groove worn into it by the lip of the seal then that will damage the new seals. If it is worn it might be worth looking at the SKF Speedi-sleeve. This is a thin steel sleeve that fits over the worn sealing surface, providing a new surface free from wear. It's thin enough that you can use the same lip seal. They aren't spectcularly cheap, but are probably cheaper than new half-shafts. www.skf.com/portal/skf/home/products?maincatalogue=1&newlink=4_5_3&lang=enOf course, this will only work if the bearings are good - as mentioned any play will kill the seals.
