So i bought a towbar for my Vitara. It uses the existing tow hook bolt points, relpacing the tow hook plates with drop plates that a bar attaches too, with the towbar bolted tot he bar.
All nice and simple, exept my vitara is far from rust free. The O/S hook plate is missing, and the captive nuts that i need to use on that side of the chassis leg are rusted to obliviion. The N/S is still present, but will need cut off because the captive nuts are just spinning freely.
So my question is, can i just cut the old plate off, prep the area on the chassis legs back there, and weld the 2 drop plates onto the chassis legs all teh way around? In my mind, welding trumps bolting, but i fear there may be a legal snag that prevents me doing this.
Any advice welcome!

With my Vitara I drilled right though the chassis and used longer bolts (with lengths of tube to stop rails getting crushed) when the captive nuts stripped their threads.

Just weld it to the bumper Al, what could possibly go wrong?
When did you get the Vitara? [EDIT] Just read your extensive build thread that was linked from your sig. I love that you were buying bits for it before you'd even picked it up.

Hehe, you know me! (well, almost. Who's Al?)
Thought about welding to the bumper, sadly they are just plastic on this era of Vitara. Bum.

Sorry folks, but to the original question (more for curiosity now than anything); would welding it on be acceptable?

bolting it on allows a certain amount of flex to be tolerated.only fractions of mm,nothing to worry about welding would make it all too Stiff,no flex at all so would soon crack the welds or the chassis it's welded to

I would say it depends on what you're welding it to. If its a chassis section of 2.5 to 3mm thickness then that would be fine, but if its was 2mm or normal car bodywork thickness ie 1mm or less, then I'd say no. There is an element of welding on most car towbars somewhere, but in this case its what you are welding to that is important. A lot of commercials use welded towbars. As long as they are welded properly there should be no failures. I had one on my stock car bus for years, that never cracked or fell off.
