Been sorting out an 1988 8v cavalier Sri engine to fit the viva, trouble is I have never worked on one of these engines, or seen one in a car, can someone point out to me how the cooling system works, there's a plastic water rail, connected to the water pump, which goes to one side of the rad, with 3 take offs, and an alloy rail on the front which has the thermostat on one end, and a take off to the throttle body, which then it goes to the other side of the rad, on the other end of this rail is 2 take offs,
Where do all these take offs go, which go to the heater and which is the return, which go to the expansion tank?

I've fitted a couple of SRi engines to Mantas and the piping is pretty easy. Quickest way is to get hold of a set of water pipes from a 1.8 manta (which is the same engine as the SRi but on a carb) There's a nice shaped top hose from thermostat to radiator Then a short 90deg pipe from the back of the water pump This goes to an alloy double T piece (2 take offs on one side) then a large pipe from the end goes forward to the bottom of the rad from the double T one medium bore pipe goes to the heater matrix the other goes to the alloy piece across the front of the engine, this one has a small bore pipe coming from the side of it to the throttle body Another medium pipe goes from the remaining outlet on the alloy piece to the heater matrix and finally a small bore pipe goes from the throttlebody to the top of the thermostat housing The manta rad has a filler cap so doesn't run a seperate expansion tank, but if you want to add one it can be joined onto the radiator pipe and connected into the small pipe from throttle body to thermostat Here's a pic showing some of the pipes If you want a set of manta rad pipes give me a shout

Ah I see, can you show me where the small bore hose connects, I can see the hose to the thermostat housing in your picture, but where does it connect to coming from the throttle body?
i am not sure about what rad I will be using yet, so may or may not need the manta hoses, I plan on making a small rail out of steel, with the required number of take off's, I had thought that the third take off on the original plastic rail, went to the bottom of the expansion tank, and maybe that the return from the throttle body went to the top of the expansion tank.
