Hi, I'm a long time lurker but relatively new member. My first car is just coming up for its first mot in my ownership. I had a mate who owns an mot only garage check it over as I thought the last mot might be slightly moody, what with the brakes on it only being an advisory, when I looked it had ebc turbogroove discs on the front but with no grooves or dimples. I changed the brakes shortly after purchase as it was dangerous but luckily apart from obvious things I knew about it's good to go. The headlights need adjusting but are the low profile hella H4 aftermarket variety. One side is too high, the other is far too high and has no visible beam pattern. I know one of the motors is duff and needs replacing but they are both disconnected and the dead light cable tied up. Anyone have any clues as to how to adjust these and if they run stock motors? The indicator stalk is also dory and main beam comes on willy nilly, can I fix the contact or is this another replacement job? Also I'm based in llangollen, north wales and although I did nvq level 2 in welding systems, I was 16 and have no access to equipment and haven't welded in a while so can anyone reccomend somewhere close ie wrexham area to weld a patch on my sill near the seatbelt mount point for passenger? Many thanks DrJekyll

The motors for the lights are exactly the same just the pivot arms are different.you might have a set of low pros from some one like brainstorm often these came with non e marked lights with no beam pattern i think this is an MOT failure now and a few mx5 owners are falling foul of this.might be an idea to get a set of normal pop ups and drop these on for the mot.the stalk failure is a common problem just replace it. Putting a patch near the cill might not be enough,mk1s rot from the inside out and i think you will find some more rust when you open it up.sorry to p*ss on your chips but i have a bit of experience with these.

As long as the patch is seam welded all the way round and the tester cant stick his little corrosion assesment tool through it the chances are its sufficient for MOT but done like that the corrosion inside is still there and the job will be 3 times as bad next year and it will need to be done again.

I am agreed on the patch to get it through its MOT but I would get it fixed properly as soon as possible as these are generally what kills 5's.Mine has started to bubble on the drivers side which is generally the sign all is not well in the cill.So when I start prepping it for hill climbing next year I will get the rot chopped right out replaced and get it waxoyled.I have been quoted about £400 a side to do it properly.
