hello chaps, looking for some advice. I'm looking to move from petrol to diesel on my daily/ dad mobile. passats are currently what I'm looking at, around '99 to '02 plates. chatting to a guy at work he recommended if i get a derv to fit a tuning chip, to increase the power, torque and economy. looking on ebay they range from around 15 quid up to a few hundred. do they work? are they a worthy investment? which one to go for? will they damage the engine? is it just snake oil? any help will be much appriciated. cheers dave

i been using a mates car on a off for 3 years and he has a chip box on it , the thing flys , runs perfect and fuel economy is excellent, better than my old tddi non chipped focus, his is a tdci focus,
i think he payed 80 quid, fitted it , and off it went we have used it to get all over the country including towing cars on a dolly and dragging a crashed 4x4 out a field and its still running nice to this day,.

some of the £15 "chips" are just a variable resistor that alters the fuel feedback signal. Works very very well if you have the pump that can support it! Not very elegant mind you - as fuel is just increased over the whole rev-range

so if fuel is increased surely the economy will be worse, not better as they claim? ive spoken to another couple of lads who reckon i shouldnt fit a "chip", but put it in and get a proper re-map. i must say I'm finding this to be a bit confusing.

Some of the more expensive chips are good, but stay away from the cheap as chips ones. 100% of the el cheapo ones are resistors. They either alter the feedback signal, or fuel temperature. Most likely the fuel temp on VW's. don't get much more power. The expensive ones are in the price range of a remap - so you would be better off with a rolling road remap. More fuel doesnt mean less economy in all senses. More fuel = more power or torque meaning less throttle input needed more than 50% of the time which in effect will save you fuel. But when you get more power, you use more throttle (fun) , saving you squat!

our lupo was done by badger-5, and i think its a remap rather than a chip.
but bloody hell does it make it quick over a stock one! (TDI sport, 1.4 3 cyl turbodizzle) its got an extra 30hp over a stock one (which is 75hp), and god know how many more torques. it can be difficult to set off in the wet on certain road surfaces without spinning up the wheels. torque steers like a curse word too when gunning it.
it did cost the guy we got it off the thick end of 500 quid to have it done though i think.

Get it remapped if you can afford the extra imo. Cheap ebay tuning boxes are cheap for a reason!

I looked into this over here. Plenty like the boxes but I'm going for a full remap. Mine's detuned anyway from factory to cope with Malaysian diesel, which leaves huge throttle lag at low speeds, so I'd like to go back to at least stock (165hp) or better if possible. They are talking about Euro 3 diesel here soon, but when soon is in KL is anyone's guess.
Waiting confirmation on price but I'm hearing RM2500 - 3000 (GPB500-600)
