Hi everyone!
I've got a problem with my cars revving and acceleration.
When you put your foot down the revs go up and the car doesn't really go any faster, or sometimes the revs go up and then theres a surge in power and the car catchs up with the revs.
i thought it was the idle control valve, so i bought a new on and it still does it! (and from other forums threads this seemed to be the problem)
This isn't a classic car unfortunately, but i thought i'd ask here as its a good forum.
The car is a focus estate 1400, so you notice it a lot when its loaded up and your trying to get on the motorway etc.
Any ideas? Hoping to fix it as if the right classic turns up i want to sell it.

Sorry to break the bad news. Your clutch is knackered - it's the only way for a manual car's revs to rise faster than the car's speed. Makes it sound a bit like an auto as the engine will rev to ~peak torque and sit there. Or, if it's an auto, the box or torque conveter is knackered.

Try mr Clutch or the like for a quote, the are generally quite good on price.

Sounds very much like a slipping clutch to me sorry on the plus side focus clutches are reasonably easy to change.

Can you stall it??
Stand on the breaks, put it in first and take your foot off the clutch (still on the brakes) and see of it stalls.
Also, is it a cable clutch or hydraulic?

It can be stalled, but the travel on the clutch is very high! It is hydraulic on these.
In first gear you can give it foot to the floor and it doesn't seem to mind its just in higher gears it starts slipping under harder acceleration, sometimes it seems better than other. Never had much experience with clutchs.
I think i'll get some quotes and see wheres best.

I can stall a car with a knackered clutch (and that was a car where the rivets were starting to be worn down! Oddly enough, oil on a friction plate has prevented me from stalling a car, even on a fresh clutch plate.
When changing the clutch it would be foolish not change it with the gearbox out of the car etc considering you'd be increasing your labour costs/time if it failed. Around 5 years ago I paid around £330 to have the above job done to a 1.6 Focus.
From what you have described it does seem that your clutch has seen better days.
