... to cover an MX5? :/
Cant find an MX5 to move the good bits of mine onto so I'm just gonna paint it up while I'm waiting to find suitable running gear to replace what I've taken out for the civic...
Just gonna roller it with rustoleum - will 2.5l be enough or will I need more? and should I use thinners or not? if so what ratio?

2.5 ltrs will be fine and cover the outside no problems. When I painted my mini with it, I used 20% celly thinners as it dries quicker than using white spirits like they suggest (about the same ratio). Other option would be graffiti paint, cheap and great coverage

Cheers Craig - graffiti will happen, but only when I go to a show with some rattle cans lol I just want to change it from red from now as I'm superstitious - the only ever red car I had I crashed within 12 hours and nearly killed myself!! Irrational to repaint a car because of this I know...

The paint shop I'm getting my paint from suggests 5l is enough to do a full respray (in & out) on a medium sized saloon. They also suggest celly thinners rather than spirits, and you can get quick and slow drying thinners. Jawel paints.

2.5 ltrs did 2 coats on my mini inside and out inc engine bay and boot, so will be fine for an external repaint of a MX5

All in all, with all the consumables, bits and bobs it cost him £160 (Not including my time to do it - a crate of beer + a curry) Should have gone with the B&Q non drip gloss.....would have looked so much more retro.....and you could have done it for £25 LOL Why would anyone in this day and age roller paint a car?

Why would anyone in this day and age roller paint a car? why ever not, I repainted my car for £50 all in inc the equipment, and got an acceptable finish and very little mess (and some can get a finish most paint shops would be proud off). I would have got my compressor out to do it, but I didn't have the space to do it (only a gravelled area, no cover). the only real down side is it takes more time

Well I suppose if you creating the post war retro traveller look, all power to you No, some people aren't apes and are able to use good technique to give them a decent finish without the expense of buying a compressor and a spray gun let alone finding a suitable location in which to use such equipment when they don't have such a place readily available besides it's a £500 car for me to learn to drift in, I really don't give a curse word about how good the paint is as I'll probably smash it up anyway... I merely want to change the colour as cheaply as possible

Because a) not everyone wants an amazing paint job, b)don't have much disposable income to either rent a compressor and equipment or pay someone else to do it or c) because I've seen rollered paint jobs actually look pretty damn good after a flat and polish. Quite clearly you wouldn't roller a modern motor, but for something that's older, I can't see the problem, everyone's taste is different for a start, I personally don't like shiny paint really, I also don't like forced rat but I'm still a lover of satin black. Personal preferences really..
