i have amk1 golf with a 1.3 from a polo gt fitted with a tldm prog. twin choke, and converted to vac type dizzy. this has been in some 4+ yrs running like a dream however recently its been cutting out under load. it idles prefectly, correct co reading. yet when i go out for a blast and give it full bore it cuts out and i roll to a stop. wait 30 secs and she will restart a run again. i can limp around but open her up and death:-( cleaned the carb out 3 times now and found no dirt, checked timing and that is perfect and it advances with rpm. fuel flow from the pump seems good. new pugs and coil fitted. I'm stumped!!!

Random cutting out like this is normally a wiring harness problem, I'd guess that "full bore" flexes something with a bad join in it. Try waggling the loom around the engine and see if it cuts out.

are you running a swirl pot on the carb with a fuel return to the tank?
I used to have that set up on my mk2 polo years ago, but there wasnt enough fuel getting to the carb, so was fine at idel and part throttle but had the symptoms you had under load. the problem was sorted by ditching the swirl pot and return and using a pressure regulator for carbs. everything looked to be working fine, but I only "discovered" the fueling problem when I stripped the carb down at the side of the road, and found the fuel bowl to be empty, yet fuel was clearly being pumped though the fuel filter

Q: Does it cut instantly when you boot it, or does it pull well briefly? And if you let it idle for a few minutes before booting it, does it pull well for a tiny bit longer?
If so I'd be looking at the fuel feed - might be a partial blockage.
Also: You say a vac-type dizzy. Points and condenser or electronic? Either way you can have a weak spark that will fire at low loads but vanish when the cylinder pressures rise - pull a plug, connect straight to the coil (shoult be the same fitement as the dizzy cap), get someone to turn it over. If the spark is weak - small, dim, and yellow or white - that's your problem. If it's big, fat and blue it's good.

Had a similar problem with a Mk4 Escort my mum had. It was the coil lead arcing out on the bodywork. Only did every once in a while. Worth changing to eliminate that.

many thanks everyone, having checked for a nice fat spark i fiound some of the wiring to the coil under alot of tension. having sorted that it now seems to be running better, with no cutting out.
however a big flat spot under acceleration has turned up. never there before all the faffing around! at between 1500 and 2000 rpm it goes flat, so low speed manovering is a pain. blip the throttle to flood the manifold a bit over comes this for a moment. I'm wondering if i need to go up a jet size on the primary? anyone know there carb tuning?
