A question for the collective mindset... I'm installing a basic stereo in the van. It has never before had a radio! What I'm after are aerial options. I don't really want to make big holes in the virgin steel on the wings so what other options are there. Could an aerial mounted inside the work? What about if I mounted one outside low down, say off a bumper bracket one side. Would that work? I'm not very good with this technical electrickery involving invisible waves....

the aerial on my imp clamps onto the rain gutter - The only problem is that it was bought at the same time as the radio (mid 70's) so I have no idea if they are still available? J

Go DAB....then you can run one of those aerial pads in your screen, and listen to the glorious sound of BBC6 Music :-)

cant you get them built into the glass of the rear window? might be pricey though.
get a metal slinky! proper 'nam technology at work!
or any other metal wire works as an aerial, could always fashion your own i imagine. or trim a normal aerial down and make it touch some bare metal bodywork (if there is any?).
I'm no expert on aerials though so i may be wrong

what van is it seth? I'm temporarily on dial up in the new place so sorry if ive missed a thread on it!! oh I don't think connecting it to bodywork would actually do anything, and could possibly damage the radio (don't ask me how) but it potentially could so I wouldnt try it!!! did u mean mount on the bumper bracket on the exterior of the van? Ariels don't seem to work too well inside metal bodied vehicles! I think the best idea so far is the inside of window kind altho i also like the gutter mounted type, problem being sourcing one, possibly worth a look at breakers?

J, that one looks perfect! Can I come round and erm, "borrow" it 'cos it's not like you're using it at the moment BrainD, I would love to go DAB but the radio is already bought and DAB's still a bit too much. I got a mention on Lamacqs show last week Goafer, don't think they do windows with built in aerials for 50 year old design brit vans SilverM, I seem to think aerials need to be insulated form the bodywork too. A clip on one like BlowngImps would be ideal and suit the van but that'd need an autojumble find I reckon. Hmmm, what do all the guys with splitties do?

Hey Seth, I had exactly the same conundrum with my Mk2 Transit... (that and I couldn't be bothered to run one through the headlining)... I used an aftermarket aerial bolted through the passenger side inner wheel arch and mounted below the dash, worked just fine. Have you got space behind the sills or somewhere like that?

spacekadett has one of those maystar ariels in the kadett, seems to work ok, I bolted the ariel in the capri to the trans tunnel, sometimes it works, mostly it doesn't I listen to cd's anyway. in the minor i used to have a small amplified ariel from an RV, a guy up the road threw it in the skip. think it was originally outside mounted, but worked ok laying on the back shelf. it was about 3"x1" in the base and 3" tall. I seem to have lost it now, otherwise I'd send it on to you

Ah, OK, so mixed success with one used inside then. I figure I might get away with it as I think I could mount one in a relatively good spot near a window but generally out of sight: Now there's a curtain in that position it would be pretty much hidden. The only external position I had been thinking about was a chrome springy aerial mounted in the front centre of the white roof but again I'm not sure I want to drill a hole though the fibreglass and I'd need to route the wire carefully down the lifting mechanism to avoid snagging. B&D thhnks for the offer. I guess if you find it then let me know
