Hi. There is a note on my V5 - 'Substantially Repaired and/or Accident Damaged. Identity Checked on ....' The car was 14 years old at that time, any idea how I find out what/why? there is nothing obvious. cheers

On a 14 year old car even something like a cracked bumper would cause it to be a write off if insurance involved so could have been something simple like minor car park prang.

I guess that is referring to the car undergoing a VIC check after it was written off (a CAT C or D etc.).
As Paul said, on a car that age it was probably something silly. I know a friend of mine had a Rover 218 VVC Coupe that came with the same note on the logbook which was a CAT D. Bar the fact that it was on 110k, it was probably the tidiest Coupe I have seen in years with a very complete history. (my mate who bought it off him in a much more terminally written off state (A farmer drove his L200 into the back of it at speed whilst nodding off!) agreed on that and came quite close to not breaking it for spares).

Mates girlfriends fto has the same, and thats because it had a full lentgh key mark fown the drivers side when it was 5 years old.......written off just after its second mot

I have said this before (although no doubt there will be one story to change all of this  ), You don't really know the history of any car (I.e if it has received serious damage). Whilst a CAT D will send alarm bells ringing at least you know where you stand. Guys I know sold off cars which many people would happily have bought (1 owner car, low mileage etc.) yet they had been repaired on the cheap from the many accidents they had. |

I know of a few cars around that have been rolled that are still on the road with no marker against them. The kids around here drive like curse word roll their car and then get daddy to turn it back on its wheels and pull it home with their tractors. They then fill them full of plop blow them over and sell them on. No marker on the V5 as the insurance company were never informed nor were the police.
There was someone on my old college course that had 5 years NCB but in that time had 11 accidents including one where the car was rolled 8 times after hitting mud on the road at over a ton.

Can I please point out you are talking complete nonsense regarding cat d cars as there is NO MARKER WHATSOEVER ON THE V5. Your mates car was cat C,it was not cat D because that will never be put on a logbook,it will only be on a v-car or HPI check,you do not VIC check cat d cars,only cat c. A VIC check also only CHECKS THE IDENTITY and nothing else,you could push the car in not mot'ed or taxed or insured and as long as the numbers match their interest is over,it's simply an additional tax for the government. Sorry if it sounds a bit arsey but having dealt in these type of vehicles for years and years the amount of Internet nonsense regarding damaged cars is scary,where people get the facts from I don't know,down the pub maybe? I had a long argument with a boy who told me in no uncertain terms that you could not tax a car that had not been VIC checked with a VIC marker on it,so I went and taxed one that day (that needed taxing) and proved it to him. He also told me you can't tax a car online that needs a VIC,funny how I do my mums every year with no issues. As the beastie boys said "don't believe the hype". |

CAT D does not need any sort of check to be put back on the road and as I've pointed out the VIC on a cat c is only to check if the cars been rung or it's id tampered with. Insurance category's are literally dependant on how the estimator feels on the day unless it's things like someone dying in the car etc or used in a crime,of course that being dependant upon it being uneconomical to repair,or "written off". The public have such little knowledge and awareness of what the terms mean,usually over glamorised by watchdog style program's that know little of the actual facts. |

vaughant is quite right,
my dads old Proton was cat 'd' ed, because of a key scratch along the length of the car.
Insurance wrote it of as said cat 'd' - uneconomical repair. Insurance paid him off, he brought the car back off them, and happily ran it for another 4 years. No change in insurance, no special test,
just the normal yearly MOT, no marker on logbook. Cat D is pretty much ''costs more than the value of the car to repair''

Fair enough I am sorry about that Vaughant:). My friend's car was probably a CAT C (I remember he was fretting over buying it at the time due to its history despite it being a very tidy VVC Coupe). AFAIK, don't CAT Ds sometimes require a VIC check? I know in the case of my old Focus the insurance company told me one thing (I.E it needed one) whilst the VIC told me something else (In most cases, no). After sending the form off, the VIC confirmed no check was required  . As in your case, I had no issues with insuring it year after year with the same insurance company or others, taxing it, or MOT'ing it for that matter. Why did you quote me the second time? I still stand by the facts in the second quote. In both scenarios where the insurance was for the time insanely expensive (as were their excesses) for the two chaps I know of, they repaired their cars on the cheap in order to circumvent the insurance. As a result, both cars had no history of ever being in an accident, one of which shall we say developed a new quirk . But that's another story . |

I have never heard of a cat d requiring a vic but do know of cars that have been clean low milage cars with good histories etc that have had some very dubious repairs. one was a honda jazz that I had to make a key for as the old one was playing up and I ended up removing the whole lockset as it had half the wafers missing. and the drivers door was a different colour to the rest of the car when I took the door card off. The guy who owned it had just bought it and it was 5 years old with full history and 30k.
