Got offered a lovely/ cheap 4.2 A8 with LPG but it has the usual stuffed autobox, its on its second box at least already, has anybody fitted anything else in its place, something yank maybe? Had a quick google but only turned up tales of woe..

A quick looks shows the A8 is FWD or 4WD. That means an alternative gearbox transplant isn't going to be easy and best bet would be another A8 item but maybe this time have it reconditioned as I suspect the current was just bought secondhand and fitted "as is". For all you know the current gearbox could have done, say, 250,000 miles in the original car before being fitted to the A8 you are interested in and therefore failure isn't unexpected.

Sorry its the quattro, previous box was rebuilt at 125k - died again at 145k, supposed good replacement managed 10k. The cars only scrap money and it just isn't worth chucking 2 grand into rebuilding the box for it

I'm pretty a manual box from an A4/A6 V6 Quattro should bolt up to the engine, but I don't know what the deal would be with the clutch pedal/electronics. I'd guess you could maybe use an auto from one though?

If you have a rummage on the web you'll see that it has been done. I think European market (not UK) A8s do exist with MT but rare. Conversions seem to use S4 or S6 parts. Pedal box might the be major challenge.
Won't be cheap as the potential donors for many of the parts are not cheap. I'm not looking any more 'cause it's feeding my A8 itch......

Agreed, they're mostly aluminium so they're worth a fair bit as scrap even after the parts are sold off. If I could find A8s locally for scrap money I'd be a rich man!
