Yeh so what can you lot tell me about rear engine skoda boxes? Looking at somthing relitivly obtainable maybe from an estelle or rapid? what would they be like? Did they have a 5speed at all? differant ratios? what kind of final drive ratios? Strong? how much power do they take? What do they look like? (pics!!) what kind of driveshaft attachment? For fiat transplant if you hadn't guessed!

From the imp conversions done with the five speed skoda gearbox, i hear that the limit is 100-120bhp. After that the CROWN wheel stops doing its job and the teeth start dropping out like a 9 year old drinking too much coke. Unsure on the driveshafts. I'm looking at doing a five speed conversion to the imp using a renault five unit, the early ones are the right way around. Renault also had the forethought to make them good for around 200bhp! don't know a lot but. 5 speed is available. 120BHP and 120lb/ft is possible fairly safely I gather. I have heard of 150bhp engines running through them but life is quite short as far as I know. No idea for ratios of driveshaft fitments though.

Not problems on the power side then as the engine has a massive 24bhp as standard so even with mods i wont be putting alot through it. Stock fiat box struggles to handle the 24!
Just exploring all the possibilitys, even tho I'm not liking them much

what about getting the inside of the fiat box treated? surly you could get the gears done with some kind of coating or somthing? and use your skillzzz to remake any weak shafts and bits in it? just an idea, not realy much help here...

:)This is the only pic I have of a Skoda box..it's not the sort of thing you normally take a pic of! ;D What exactly are you planning on doing? The 5 speed box from a Skoda is relatively high geared.. 20.8 mph per 1000rpm in 5th on a 130/136...would a 24bhp engine be OK with that? Just thinking that a Skoda 136 engine and box would make for a very fun little Fiat!

This car pisses me off, i just cant come up with a combination that makes me 'want' to build it. everythings either too slow, too expensive, too boring or just dosent feel right. Using the fiat engine on a differant box just makes me think why go to all the hassle for something so slow, why not just transfer the engine aswell! But then if i fit a differant engine the car looses most of its appeal. Id love to just tune the fiat engine, throw on a turbo and injection and have some fun wharlst the car still keeps if original 'feel' but in reality that means big money, steel cranks and s/c gear kits imported from europe for something thats still not exactly going to feel lightning fast when its done!

Weld in the front end of an Uno Turbo?
Still FIAT, still fun, still (relatively) easy...

Stick in a 2 cylinder bike engine mounted sideways straight onto a diff from say a Sierra and your laughing, got the sound, the power and a 6 speed box!
Plus its gonna be right cheap, pick up a whole crashed bike for £200, then sell bits on. Engine mounts are simple, the only 'hard' bit is making the gears work, but then as its just push/pull, a cable setup would soon do the job.
If your 126 is an old aircooled one, there's enough room to do the same with an inline 4 superbike engine - 150bhp easy and again 6 speed! But what i'd really like to see is a big twin 2-stroke out of a crosser in there, imagine your face when the powerband kicks in

If i swap the engine then the whole car just looses its appeal to me I'm afrade. :/ Bike engines have been done a million times and are plain boring to me now, car engines even more so! and in a little fiat even even more more so!! They might make the car fast but theres alot more to it than that, i want it to surprise you! If i was going to do a serious engine swap it would have to be on something where you wouldnt be expecting it. Its not because i don't like the idea of a fiat with a fast motor it just not 'out there' enough for me to justify spending my time on when i feel i have better ideas in my head. Never the less i relly like them and they have potential in there somewhere! I just need a good idea and i cant think of one yet, so expect more threads like this as i need to come up with something one day! SORRY!

not going to be easy to find, but what about an 850 or similar fiat gearbox? will probably need some input shaft tinkering and bellhousing sorted, but it could handle more than 25bhp..... hasn't ministrone got an 850 camper or something? if so you could blag some details and pics off off him!

Yeh i was thinking that, or maybe a 600 box. i like that idea better then the skoda option but maybe a bit harder to get hold of.
