Solved the problem of needing an automatic for a month or two... Really know curse word all about them, but it seems nice enough, had a year's ticket on it and cost... well, let's say I'd think twice about selling my ratty MX5 for what it cost. Only problem is that the passenger door lock is having a fit and won't release the deadlock, after initially refusing to latch and the seller slamming the door to get it to shut. I sense the logistical horrors of stripping a door that won't open in my future, or a very irritable girlfriend tired of climbing in over the window... Any tips on common maintenance would be awesome. It's had a bulkhead repair in the past, which from the look of the invoice is a common thing, and the auto box could definitely do with a fluid change. It's a 2.0 H engine apparently.

Had a few door problems on mine and my dads 9k. Bloody things.
Nice vert, looks good. A lot of car for the money. Does the 'S' have a turbo or is it N/A?

It is 2.0 N/A. Where the N/A applies to "power", as in " Power - N/A". Sluggish thing.
I don't know if I'd bother upgrading it, as it's a temporary hack, but I'm definitely interested in fixing the doors for £20. And mildly amused that having had to sell the SLK (damn clients), I ended up with a Saab cabriolet too! (My friend that bought the SLK is enjoying it at least).

Fixed the door, without need for door trim removal or other drama! Aldi Buttcam to the rescue again. For future reference, on mine the internal door release rod wasn't returning at the lock end. So one, it wouldn't latch, two, when slammed it locked, and three, as the internal release disables the locking mechanism, it wouldn't unlock either! Easily sorted from above with the window open, though less fun if the window is shut. Door properly fixed now. Someone's been in there in the past so I need to take off the door trim anyway and reclip it - they'd left some clips off. Next: Electric mirrors and headlamp wipers...

The cab looks great, you can't beat a nice 900s. I've got a 1996 black 5 door Viggen replica myself.

Here's how it looks today after a wash... (Edit: Wow. ViewNX does NOT give you any idea of what the file is going to do, clearly; come on D600 support in Lightroom!).

I have no idea what I'll do with it, but doubt I'll be bothering with any marque forums. It's a stopgap, and one I'm regretting 'cause I have no love at all for the Vectra platform.
Getting a new exhaust tomorrow. Need to make a decision on the car's long-term prospects; body certainly appears mostly good...

Okay, so these rack brace things...
Abbott racing is £199. There's an eBay one for £99. I get the impression that these were developed in the US and Abbott's "these inferior things are to be avoided" is as much to do with protecting profit margin on imported bits as it is to do with relative quality.
That said, just as I'd fit a clutch reinforcing plate to a Scirocco, if these things are any good, I'll chuck one on the 900 to prevent the firewall cracking (again). Is there any factual basis for the "imported ones are curse word"?

Well, it's properly wimp material, but I went to Kwik-Fit for the back box and frankly, I'm glad I did. It may have 'cost' twice as much as just buying the box on eBay, but fitting it was a PITA - ended up helping keep the centre pipe steady so the fitters could do their bit. End result isn't bad though, sounds a lot better for it and whilst it was on the ramps they did the MOT suspension abuse machine, and found nothing wrong with it. So I guess it really is supposed to handle like that... terrifying! It's solid underneath, too. As such, it's been given an oil & filter change and I'm thinking about fitting the braces after all. It's not that bad a car if I can get over the idea that "SAAB" stands for something very different, in my mind.

Mission accomplished - achievement unlocked: M1 Battle! The mess on the door is not bird mess. I T-cut the windscreen frame last night and clearly spilled some, then didn't notice when I set off at 6am... I'll evict the XM and give it a proper polish this week. Mirrors started working again. Enough that I think cleaning the switch will result in 100% operation. Next, headlight wipers. An ATF fluid change is also on the cards.

Keep an eye on any leaks into the boot - especially the clusters. Over time, they will make a mess of the rear suspension turrets. HTH

Bone dry inside, not a hint of damp anywhere except where it'd got the usual mouldy marks on the bonnet sound deadening from sitting for almost a year. Mostly it's cobwebs I need to clear up

Few hundred miles done now...
And I don't hate it. It's slow, yes, and dynamically challenged, but... it's sort of comfortable. And quiet. And seems relatively unbothered by being in heavy traffic and so forth.
So now I'm trying to decide if I fit braces and the like, or if I sell it and buy a '99 9-3. When did all the good updates happen to the car, particularly roof and chassis-wise?
Need yet more operations, so the automatic stopgap has to hang around longer :/
