I have a 1994 LTI Fairway with an annoying issue. It is the Nissan TD27 engine (the T does not mean 'turbo' unfortunately) - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_TD_engine#TD27
When cruising on the motorway it would be nice to be able to use all of the 85hp to keep 3 tonnes of rust moving at a bit more than 50mph.
The problem I have is that if I try to press the accelerator all the way to the floor it kicks down into 2nd and pretty much stays there. If I keep the throttle 3/4 open it will cruise in 3rd but 45mph up slight hills, 55 on the flat and 60 down a gentle hill is just a bit too slow. If I could keep it going at about 60 to 65 I would be happier.
I'm about to take it on the motorway again and want to sort this problem out.
In my experience of automatics the gearbox does not generally kick-down when you are approaching maximum speed. When already above the best part of 2nd gear a 3-speed auto will stay in 3rd so kicking-down like this seems unusual to me.
I'm thinking about adjusting the kick-down cable as a first step.
Also, pushing my luck I know, but supposing someone did know something about these engines, is there any way to tune them up to make sure they are producing as much power as they are supposed to?
