I've never looked into this so thought I'd ask. Is it possible to shorten a standard mechanical handbrake lever whilst still retaining the locking button? I've got a hydraulic handbrake for my Proton, but I'd rather keep the mechanical handbrake aswell as if I just bolt it on for the MOT the caliper handbrake mech will seize as they're marginal even when used all the time.
The problem is the handbrake handle takes up a lot of the space the Hydro handle needs to be, so I'm wondering if I can cut the mech handbrake lever down. Lot to make room.

yeah you should be able to matt, depending on exactly how it works. typically theres a threaded rod with a spring stop on it down the middle, you may have to move the spring stop down as well as cutting down the threaded rod for it to work still. really you need to get it apart to see how the ratchet mech works.
oh, and your post on FB the other day about a cheap hydro- got a link?

It was an eBay win mate, brand new but pre owned, boxed for £57 posted. Think they're around £100 brand new from Compbrake.
I keep meaning to find out if there's a cheap source of .625 master cylinders as the other metalwork is dead easy to make.

the thing with land rover ones is although can be picked up for as little as 9 quid, all series land rover master cyls are 3/4". the 5/8" are much harder and more expensive to get, coming in at just under 20 quid for the cheapest source ive found. i did think about making my setup own up as i could obviously make summat pretty nice, but when a m/c, clevis and a spherical bearing come to at least £30, something like this one ive been eyeing up on ebay seems great VFM, a very close copy of the compbrake one and half the price- www.ebay.co.uk/itm/230851423723?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

Yup, Compbrake is the cheapest place to get 5/8 masters cylinders at £18.50 delivered. Still better than the Imp parts suppliers at ~£45 + postage...

Yeah that's it, when you start wondering how they're actually making any money on an item its not worth making yourself.
You can get kits to convert the stock handbrake lever to hydraulic.

Are you doing the hyd hb for fun or for motorsport? If the latter have you seen the new regs for hyd hb on (road) rally cars? I can't remember the exact details cos you're not allowed them on Enduro rallies, but iirc you need to retain the OEM lever and pivot point.

Yeah the new regs say that you should convert the stock handbrake to hydraulic. TBH its more for a laugh, and so I can do a bit of autotesting. I don't want to lose the mechanical handbrake as itll just knack the mechanism and i'll end up rebuilding the calipers for every MOT. I can always take the handle off for road rallies.
